"Are you okay" his faint whisper reaches through my haze.

I nod and step away from his embrace. My shallow breaths dim until my chest no longer reaches my chin and I steady my gaze. He's staring at me in confusion, worry and an emotion my addled brain doesn't have the processing power to decipher.

"I'm fine, really. Thank you, I should be going now" I hurriedly expel the words before I risk losing my composure again. He nods this time while his companion stares between us in obvious interest.

My feet carry my weight unbeknownst to me and by the time I reach my car, I barely feel coherent enough to understand how I managed to leave that corridor, but one's things for sure, he didn't recognise me.

Could it be possible, that he's forgotten what happened entirely? It is for the best, for both our sake but I can't help but feel resentful. He was able to forget, he was able to move on and be fine. Where does that leave me? A shell of a human being that barely remembers her true self or was her true self the real imposter and this new self the true self.

The thoughts I ponder help me forget but they don't change the reality. I am a monster now because the only way to kill monsters is by becoming what they fear. That's the truest thing I know.

My phone vibrates in my lap and I answer on instinct. Missing a call on this burner could be the difference between being a free woman 1 minute or a criminal on the run the next.

"Speak" the word laced with calculated malice.

"I'm sorry boss, I had no idea that she would say anything, she seemed so legit, I should've checked again to make sure, I know, I just completely forg-"

"If you're there when I arrive, I'll strip you of every asset you own and for good measure, I'll even bankrupt your struggling parents"

"But boss, please give me another chance, I know I fucked up but I-"

"You've already wasted my time, my breath and my patience. Consider yourself lucky that I haven't sucked your accounts dry and for the last fucking time, its madam not boss you fucking impudent asshole".

Fucking amateurs. Hiring recruits always lead to some screw up that I have to clean. This time, though, it may be a bigger mess than even I could have anticipated.

I twirl the ring on my pinky as I come up with a strategy. Right now, she's the only one that can help. My fingers dial and the phone rings. It's ringing for what feels like a century and then nothing. Why isn't she picking up? She has to know about what going on by now so she can't possibly be out of reach.

"Oh, shit" I yell as realization dawns. I hurriedly exit the car and make my towards the exit. Just as my hand reaches the handle, the door swings open.

"Z, what's going on, how did they manage to get you here too?"

Her hazel eyes seem restless whilst she stands there with her footing misaligned holding herself up in a dejected posture.

"Did you talk to him?" She forces out as she makes her way to my car.

"He spilt what he could, exactly what you'd expect of a rat"

"And..."

"And nothing. He is useless to us and he knows he's useless to the cops"

"The NDA, he may have signed one but our fake victim didn't everything she knows could be everything he knows"

"I've made sure he only knew enough to do his job, the problem here isn't an info leak, its the fall out from our newfound fame amongst our newfound fans, Interpol" We both stare aimlessly at the cement wall in from of us.

"Sorry, I didn't get you out sooner, I was a bit preoccupied but I should've known after you were out of reach all morning".

"Don't worry, I may look like I went through hell, which I must admit is true, but it's not because of those barely qualified schmucks, its this creature eating away all my energy and the precious food I adore".

We both laugh. Her belly seems to get larger and larger before either of us even have enough time to notice it.

"Ugh, I'm gonna mince that little shit if he has the audacity to be there when we arrive, the fact that he put you and me through this makes me truly certain that trusting no one is the most trustworthy thing I can do for myself".

"Its fine Vy, you're fine, I'm fine. The problem is much less difficult to handle compared to 2013. You remember right? How that embassy located us and confiscated our entire operation. I was shitting myself but you were as calm as you always are". She laughs to herself.

"Its a miracle we found Dub, if not for him we would've been ghosts, not dead but not alive in society's sense".

"He really is a miracle, isn't he" she winks and I feel the bile rise.

"Yeah, yeah, he's you're miracle, how disgustingly romantic, but I'm trying to drive and I'm not interested in barfing on this steering wheel, this Porsche has only been my miracle for 2 months now and I'd like her to last at least as long as that baby in your stomach does before it hatches out" I shift as I see the movement of her elbow to my side. She misses and punches me in the arm.

"For your information, a human baby is given birth to, you, my good friend are under the assumption that my baby is a chick and requires hatching which I must correct you is wrong on every biological level".

"Whatever, it'll come out of you either way" she laughs as I smirk and drive out of the empty basement.
