Angie drove me home that night. When she pulled into the driveway I sighed. I dreaded going home, but I knew I had to. I walked out of the car and to the front door. I was digging in my bag for my keys when I heard crying on the other side of the door. Lucas.

As soon as I got the door open I ran to my brother.

“Lucas wheres daddy?” He pointed up the stairs. “In his room?” He shook his head no. “Where upstairs is daddy Lucas?” He grabbed my hand walked me up the stairs.

“In there.” He said while pointing to the bathroom. My heart stopped. That could only mean one thing. He wouldn’t do this again. He just got back. I placed my hand on the door knob scared of what was on the other side of the door. I pushed my feelings aside and smiled at Lucas. I had to be strong for my brother’s sake.

“Dad?” I stuck my head inside the door. Sure enough there he was. Passed out in the bathtub clutching a bottle of vodka. I was about to enter further into the bathroom when I  heard a key in the door. “Lucas go play in your room.”

“How was your night?” My mother asked as she shut the door behind her.

“Dad has to go back to Warren.” Warren was the rehab center my dad has been going to for a couple of months. I didn’t look at her. I could bear to see her face when I said this. Pain shot through the left side of my face.

“Don’t you dare joke about something like that!” I gently touch where she had hit me.

“I’m not joking. See for yourself.” I pointed to the bathroom door. I flinched slightly as she came closer to me. When she pasted I went down to the kitchen to make some pasta for Lucas and I. I was facing the stove when she came in.

“You did this to him!” She pulled my hair to turn me around. I stayed quiet. There was no reason to anger her more. “He drinks because of you!” I was soon flat against the kitchen floor. She kicked me again and again in the stomach. The pain was unbearable, but I wouldn’t let a single tear escape. I would never let her be satisfied.

“Mommy what are you doing to sissy?” She stopped and turned to see Lucas standing in the doorway of the kitchen.

“Oh nothing sweetheart. She just fell and I was helping her help.” She stuck her hand out for me. I ignored it and got up on my own. “Go play Lucas.” He nodded at her command and followed me up the stairs.
