It was the day of our placement test. Our class teacher gave us papers. I got my paper
but it wasn’t anything like I expected it to be.
There was only one question on the whole paper. It was quite unusual. Still I read it.
To my surprise it wasn’t any academic question. The question was about a book. But
it is not an educational book it was about a detective story called “The Blacklist”.
The Blacklist is one of my favorite books which is about a weird school. And the
student in there had to face some unusual circumstances and the question was how
they were able to solve the school’s problem. As a fan of the story, it was really easy
for me to answer it. But I still wondered why they decided to give us a question like
this. It really didn’t make any sense.
Anyway it was lunchtime, so I decided not to ponder over this anymore. Food comes
first, others can wait. I reached the cafeteria and saw Pete and Nom waving at me.
“Hey Kai, over here”
I went there and sat next to them. “Hey guys, that’s the weirdest test I’ve ever faced”
I said stealing some chicken wings from Nom’s plate.
“Yeah it’s weird because it’s hard. I didn’t have time to do all the five questions. I
did only four” Pete sighed.
This made me choke on the chicken wings, I started to cough like a mad man. “What
five questions? There was only one” I hardly talked through coughs.
“Kai have you gone insane? You slept well last night, didn’t you? Or are you still
sleepy? Don’t tell me you didn’t do it properly” Nom sounded angry.
“What? No. I did the paper properly. But I clearly remember there was only one
question.”
‘Or was there another page I missed or something? Now that they talk like this I’m
not even sure myself’
“What are you saying Kai? There were five long questions. You must have only
done one and now you even complain about it”
“But I... hmm maybe you’re right!” I don’t care anyway. When was the last time I
worried about any academic thing? Moreover I don’t even want to be a part of that
seven secret or whatever the stupid project.
After two other boring subjects that I had no choice but to attend I decided to go to
my room and take a nap.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated and it was a text from the same number as yesterday’s
night, with the school logo as its profile picture.
“Good job, well done!”
This text gave me a weird feeling. If what Pete and Nom said few hours ago was
true, there was no way I could get such a text because I didn’t do the test well at all.
With the sudden thought I pressed the group call icon in order to talk with Pete and
Nom.
“Hey sup, missing us already?” Pete cheerfully greeted.
“Hey, did you guys receive the text?” I asked.
“What text? I don’t think I got any.”
“Me neither” Nom answered.
“The text with the school logo? Wait let me send a screenshot” I hold the call and
sent a screenshot of the text to our group. “This is the text. Didn’t you guys get the
same?”
“Okay first of all, no I didn’t get any text with the school logo. And secondly, you
didn’t send any screenshot to the group” Nom’s bored voice could be heard.
“What are you guys even talking about? I sent the screenshot. Here it says sent but
any of you two hasn’t seen it yet.” I started getting frustrated.
“You know what Kai? I think you’ve woken up from the wrong side today. Just go
to your room and take a nap.”
“What? No listen, I-” both of them declined the call without letting me talk.
There was no way I could sleep that night. I opened our group chat again. There
were three ‘good night’ texts from three of us below that screenshot I sent. When I
clicked on my ‘good night’, text it clearly said that other two have seen it. But not
the screenshot. Why can’t they see it? I spent the whole night awake thinking about
this.
The next day when I went to school, the results were out. The notice board area was
too crowded because all the students were too eager to check whether they’ve gotten
accepted to the new project. I had no interest in any of those, so I quietly walked
away.
“Hey Kai where are you going? Don’t you want to see whether you’re qualified to
super 7?” I heard Nom’s voice behind me. “There’s nothing to check. I won’t get
qualified anyway.” I responded and left.
I went to my classroom and took my books out from the locker. But suddenly
someone hit me on my back and I got startled, causing me to drop all the books to
the floor. I turned around only to find out Pete and Nom grinning at me like maniacs.
“What the hell Pete. What was that for?”
“KAI, YOU GOT INTO SUPER 7” Pete shouted excitedly. And I couldn’t believe
my ears. There was no way I got into the new project. Not to mention that I even
messed up my exam paper.
“What are you talking about Pete? I think you must have mistaken.”
“Dude, you’re awesome. I knew you’re so talented. You’re just pretending to be
dumb, aren’t you?” Nom said in a teasing voice.
“What? No no. This can’t be happening. This’s insane.” I muttered to myself.
“But how did you manage to get in? The paper was so hard and the time was not
enough.” Pete asked.
“I told you that I didn’t do such a paper. This should be a mistake. I should talk to
the teacher and clear the possible misunderstanding.” That was the only answer I
could come up with. There was no way I got into it.
Right?
