The Auction of My Heart (Twenty)

I woke up with a startle. My hand flew to my chest to stop the erratic pounding in my heart. I looked next to me. Vincent was still sleeping. My dream…I couldn’t remember it now. I couldn’t remember anything about it. All I knew is that today I had to be at the slave auction when it started. There was something there that I had to see. Someone was waiting for me there. I knew it. And I knew I had to go alone. I’m sure Vincent would let me go alone since the shield was up…or maybe I would just have to use that as a reason. I could always tell him that I’m going somewhere else…but then I would have to lie to him.

I got out of bed quietly and slipped on my robe that was hanging on the chair. I also slipped on some house shoes before silently leaving the bedroom. I closed the door behind me so Vincent could get more sleep. As I walked down to the kitchen I bumped into someone. I gasped and started to apologize.

“My queen, I am so sorry to have bumped you.” It was Gregory.

I smiled at him, “It’s alright. I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”

He bowed his head and continued up the stairs. He’s been doing a very nice job lately. However, I feel that there is something off about him. He showed up at the perfect time. How did he know that we needed someone to help out around here? It didn’t make sense. I put this in the back of my mind and continued down to the kitchen.

When I got there, I saw Daemon sitting on one of the stools at the bar. He turned around when I entered. “Couldn’t sleep, either?” He asked.

I laughed and shook my head, “No. I’ve been having nightmares and they keep me from sleeping.” I told him as I searched for something to eat.

“Nightmares? What about?” He asked.

I shrugged as I cut myself a piece of cake. “I can’t remember honestly. I just know that I’m terrified when I wake and then it’s gone. I can’t remember any of it. But I do know that I have to be at the auction today. Something is pulling me there.”

He looked at me for a moment in thought. “I’m sure Vincent will be glad to take you there later.”

I shook my head. “No. I have to go alone. I feel that way, anyway.”

“You really think he’ll le—” He stopped talking as we heard a scream coming from the dungeon. It was very loud. I pushed my stool back and started to run there. Halfway there I remembered that I could blink there. So I did.

When I got there, I saw a girl tied to a table. Her arm was cut so badly that the only thing keeping it attached to her body was a thin piece of skin. Beside of her stood the torturer. I don’t know his name.

“Stop!” I screamed as he put the knife back to her arm. She was screaming and thrashing on the table.

The man turned to look at me. His head was shaved. He was tall and muscular. He’s eye were very dark. He scowled at me and then dropped to his knees in a bow.

“Your highness, is there a problem?” He asked quickly.
