IN THE DESERT

One day a man into a desertwalked

Dazed by hunger and the heat.

All he needed was a place wherein to sleep

And place wherein to eat.

But where in a desert?

As far as his eyes could see

It's an expanse of void in which to die.

Instead of a briny sea of sapphire

A veil of sand would meet the sky.

There, in a hopeless desert.

But in an instant beyond belief

He saw something off the west;

An oasis! Or whate'er it may be--

A place of food and rest!

Here, in a grim desert!

His will returned as he ran

The previous woe now did not he mind.

The burning sirocco now a tepid breeze

Now that an oasis he did find

Amidst a boiling desert.

But as he went nearer

As he, starving, drooled,

It was then he sadly realized

By a mirage he has been fooled.

Nothing but nothing in a desert.

He laughed at himself

Pitying his decrepit heart;

What he at first thought of as salvation

Was nature's trickery from the start.

That mirage... in a dreary desert.
