THE VISIONARY'S "RAPTURE"

She ran into the streets, eyes to the skies,

And her heart was ablaze and did yearn;

She ran and spouted tongues, the words,

The "sacred babble" of the souls that burn,

Claiming, "all the world will soon stand still

And even being itself'll cease at the Master's return!"

She trembled, and shook and shiv'ring, shuffled

'Neath the overcast sky, more impatient than afraid;

And with all fervor, with "divine madness"

She howled more prattle and prayed and prayed,

Roaring warnings and admonitions with the rumble

Of looming thund'r 'cross the ghastly firmament's shade.

"Weep now in wrath," said she suddenly in a voice

We understood, "you are defeated, you Vilest Whore!"

Then she pointed at us with a wicked, wizened finger,

"Watch your dupes all burn in hell forevermore!"

She shrieked in a voice, a dark and ghostly voice,

A batter'd voice by memories of yore.

"'Thas come!" quoth she, "'thas come at last!"

She wept at last, devoutly, devoutly trembling,

And she pointed longingly at sky, where, she claimed

To see the saved in the welkin assembling!

Raising her hands, singing arcane hymns

To the tune of the nearing thunder's rumbling.

"Reach out to me your hand, o my Master ador'd!"

She cried out in mirthless vain;

But no heaven opened, no reply but the winds,

The prophetic winds that billow'd wild, insane

"Me to your glorious kingdom take!" she begged,

Wailed with the growing stripes of pain.

And then, with the lightning's flash, the storm

Struck its scourge, and she cried, "the Lord forgot me!"

Falling to her withered knees, her withered voice

Broke, to realize her final tragedy;

The visionary lingered, but no Elysium's angels

Would care to keep her company.
