Out in The Cold

OUT IN THE COLD

Out in the cold, out in the bleakness then,

But we were out, our hearts in a song--

Out in the ceaseless, ceaseless rain,

Out in the cold forgetful of pain,

Out and free, finding happiness unrestrained.

Ah youth, terrible machinations of fate!

How far, how hurtfully can dreams hurt?

We were out then under a firmament of gray,

Out in the fleeting joy of a stormy day!

And we were in love with each other then!

Out in the lonesome, dreary street!

We were wishing then this would cease not.

But what a wish! Rain always subsides,

And oblivion fades to wakefulness,

Until its charm crack'd and left us desolate.

But this not a dream is! Once it was so

That we were out! Out in the lovely rain,

Mid the patter and chatter and flipping and dripping

Once were we in love, and all the moments slipping

Witness bore, that once were we standing,

Our hearts frisking, never ever minding the rain,

In thrall to love, forgetting our previous pain.
