5. A DATE IN THE WOODS

‘How much longer is this going to take?’ I whined. The ‘lady in waiting’ that had been assigned to me (what was she waiting for, anyways?) just scoffed.

‘Don’t you want to look beautiful for your outing with His Royal Highness?’

‘Say what? Who’s high?’

‘I meant the prince, Your Majesty.’

‘Christopher’s high?’ I gasped and yanked my head around. The chick hissed.

‘Don’t move around like that,’ she scolded, ‘you’ll ruin your braid.’

‘Sorry.’

‘Now, just put on the dress on the bed- without touching your hair and makeup- and meet Prince Christopher outside. I believe he’s waiting for you in the hall,’ the lady in waiting said before prancing out of the room, her nose high in the air.

I wonder what crawled up her butt and died?

On the bed was another dress- because they were always trying to make me wear dresses. It was bright yellow (I think the royal stylist must have noticed my personality) and had thick, off the shoulder straps that crossed my chest in almost a wrap-dress fashion. Once I had tugged it onto my slight frame, it fell prettily to my knees.

At least this one didn’t make me look like a grasshopper.

By the bed were some white converses, obviously for me, which I quickly tugged on. Well, I tried to. Somehow I ended up on the floor before the first shoe was halfway on my foot. Christopher quickly barged into the room, obviously hearing the sound of me hitting the floor, and let out a loud laugh.

‘What are you doing?’ he asked. I’d noticed that he had seemed lighter and more carefree since Sebastian (the werewolf dude) and his father had left for their kingdom.

‘I’m hugging the floor, duh!’

‘Suuure.’ He held out his hands to help me up before pushing me onto the bed. Going down on his knees, he took the converse shoe and carefully put it on my socked foot.

‘I feel like Cinderella,’ I teased.

‘Well, you are my princess, aren’t you?’ Wow, someone’s being romantic today. He must be in a really good mood.

‘Am I?’ I giggled. ‘Sometimes I feel like a troll, surrounded by all you posh people. Even my freaking lady in waiting, whatever the hell that is, is posher than me. And I know a lot of your staff either don’t like me, look down upon me in disapproval or are scared of me after that last dinner…’

‘I don’t care what they think,’ Christopher said lightly, ‘and I’m not going to ask you to change yourself. You’re not perfect, but I love you just the way you are.’

Cue the ‘awws’.

‘I love you too,’ was my genius response. Now that both of my shoes were on my feet without me breaking any bones, he hauled me up into his arms and wrapped an arm around my waist. For some reason, we went down the big stairs and out of the castle.

‘This way,’ Christopher informed me and tugged me towards the woods.

‘What if we get eaten by turnips?’

‘We won’t get eaten by turnips, Milee, they don’t grow those in the forest.’

‘Oh.’

We went in pretty deep, Christopher leading the way. I had no idea where we were or where we were going, but I trusted him. Well, I sort of trusted him. Kind of.
