Chapter Ten: A Mortal Enemy

I rolled my eyes as Aaron sat beside me sniggering to himself over yet another ‘that’s what she said’ joke he had made.

That made three so far. Three.

I sent Isaac and Rachel a pleading look, but Rachel was studiously ignoring my plea for help and Isaac hadn’t done much but shrug helplessly as if to say ‘there’s nothing I can do’.

“HEY, TAYLOR!” I let out a sigh of relief when I heard Jake’s familiar voice calling out to me from across the room.

My saviour!

A hopeful grin lit up my face as I turned around, but I lost it almost instantly when I saw Jake wasn’t alone. Alongside him (actually slightly to the left and a few inches behind) stood none other than a scowling Mackenzie.

One look at his grumpy expression told me he wanted to be here just as much as I wanted him to be.

I held in a groan, as they got closer.

“Hey Jake. Mackenzie. I didn’t realise you were coming.”

“Jake forc–” Jake delivered an elbow into Mackenzie’s side stopping him mid-sentence. Mackenzie grimaced making me grin a little. “Invited me.” He corrected himself, throwing his best friend an ‘are you happy now’ glare.

I smiled a little at the small interaction.

“So Taylor, you ready to lose?” Jake asked me playfully.

I gave him a grin in return. “I’ll have you know I got almost all strikes on wii bowling the other day.” I mock bragged.

Rachel scoffed loudly.

“Okay so I got two strikes and three spares.” I corrected myself.

“And three gutter balls.” Isaac tagged on the end.

I narrowed my eyes at them both and Jake smiled widely in amusement. “So you’ve improved a lot.” He said looking slightly impressed.

I beamed at him.

“I knew there was a reason for you being my favourite Walker.” I told Jake smilingly.

“Hey.” Rachel complained. I didn’t pay her any notice.

Jake smiled back before his eyes moved over to my left where Aaron was sitting. “So this must be Adam?” He asked, with a slight strain in his voice that I wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for the fact I’d known him most my life.

I figured Rachel must have already told him Aaron was going to be here.

Aaron.” Rachel corrected. Jake didn’t look embarrassed by his mistake; he had a hard look on his face as he stared at Aaron – and I smiled at his protectiveness.
