i am not accustomed to kindness

you are sugar
and i am stone

you love me with kind hands
soft kisses and bunches of flowers
but how can i accept that
when all i know is slammed doors
and rough fingers entering
without my permission

you take me out on dinner dates
hold my hand and bring me chocolates
but how can i accept that
when all i know is dark alleyways
and the smell of hard liquor
from the empty bottle in his hand

how can i accept your love
when pain is all i know?
