The next few weeks were crucial; all the soldiers were really pushing themselves including Steve who had to endure not only this training but being bullied by the other soldiers which annoyed me. Though Steve has shown a lot more promise than the rest with being the only one in seventeen years to retrieve the flag from the flag pole.
"Agent E. Carter?" a voice yelled I turned to see Colonel Phillips signaling me to come over and I also saw my mentor Dr. Erskine standing with him. I excused myself from my sister and made my way over to the two.
"Colonel...Dr. Erskine?" I started Colonel Phillips signaled me to follow them and we began the long stride through the field.

"Dr. Erskine has told me that you had suggested for Rogers for the program...why is that?" he asked I turned to see Steve still pushing himself while the others around were trying to hide their laughs and snickers.
"I met Rogers a few days back and saw that the kid had a lot of heart especially with his persistence in joining the army. I know he may seem small but I believe he could be an excellent choice in the end." I explained watching the Colonel nod taking my point to consideration as we all stood watching the soldiers continue on with my sister yelling out orders here and there.

"He is the clear choice in my opinion and that wasn't because of Eleanor's suggestion." Dr. Erskine added while I could see Colonel Phillip's brow harden on Steve watching him like a hawk before turning back to us.
"When the two of you brought a ninety pound asthmatic onto my base, I let it slide. I thought what the hell? Maybe he'll be useful to you, like a gerbil. I never thought you would pick him Abe." Colonel exclaimed I swallowed sharply fearing that Colonel Phillips would change Dr. Erskine's mind about picking Steve for the program. Steve needed this chance to finally prove himself and I didn't know what I could say to convince Colonel Phillips. "You stick a needle in that kids arm and it's gonna go right through him."

"I am looking for qualities beyond the physical and it's like Eleanor said. The kid has heart and the courage to even be here with those physical differences." Dr. Erskine explained I nodded agreeing with him and I could see that Colonel Phillips was still not convinced.
"Do you know how long it took to set up this project?" Colonel Phillips asked I felt a bit ashamed but I kept my gaze forward in hopes not to show my worry to him.
"Yeah, I know." Dr. Erskine answered I gave a small nod yes in my response turning back to the recruits seeing Steve was still fighting.
"All the groveling I had to do in front of the Senator what's his name's committee?" Colonel Phillips continued I clutched my fist tightly, I had an idea on how to prove that Steve was worthy.
"Yes I know and I am aware of your efforts." Dr. Erskine continued I saw what I needed to prove Steve's worth and went to retrieve it. As I returned I heard them talking about Hodge being a better candidate for the procedure.
"I can prove that Steve is a better candidate if you will let me?" I answered watching the two nod as we moved up to the soldiers but they didn't notice us coming forward. With the object that I took from another trainer in my hand I tossed it to the floor catching everyone's attention. "Grenade!" All the other soldiers moved away but I saw Steve jump on top of it and cover it with his whole body waiting for the inevitable.

"Get away!" he yelled no explosion happened and everyone else began to relax to know it wasn't a real one.
"Dummy grenade...all clear. Back to training recruits." I ordered everyone went back to what they were supposed to do and Steve stood up dusting off his clothes locking eyes with me. I turned to look at Colonel Phillips who was surprised by what just happened a few moments ago. "We don't win wars with just brute strength; we win wars with guts and hearts. As you saw...Rogers has more of that than anyone else here." I could see Dr. Erskine wink at me which told me that he was with me on this.
"Is this a test?" Steve asked behind me I turned to look at him giving him a slight nod then looked back at Colonel Phillips who was still a bit concerned by the choice.

"He's still skinny." Colonel Phillips announced before moving away as I tried to hide my chuckles by biting on my lower lip looking at Steve who was still confused behind me and then at Dr. Erskine.
"I think we found our candidate." Dr. Erskine answered I nodded in agreement but Steve was still dumbfounded by what happened to even know what Dr. Erskine meant. He was about to find out that his life is going to change forever.
