the pear

today i have a pear to eat

it is my third this week

i got the first as a gift on sunday

it looked nearly ripe then and it was huge

red freckled lenticles speckled yellow-green skin

(dewy rainbow trout and it seemed really hard)

i kept it in my bag on my travels but could hardly think of anything else

all day

by the time i got home my juices were flowing and i retrieved that pear

it looked good and i rinsed it well

dried it with the kitchen towel,

buffing it till it glowed,

fat

i cut it into perfect quarters

core quartered too, pear pips intact

colour inside nearly white, flesh softly crisp

but moist-so-moisty tang and wet with sap

as was my palate

watering

i bit into the flesh it tasted of

angelcenters, sweetpearsweet

firmly holding its own in my mouth

the faintest struggle ensued inside

but of course my tongue wins every time

and swallowing is my choice

the cinnamony taste lingers for days

i have a pear to eat

did i tell you?

during mating rituals, facial expressions form an important part of intraspecies communication, and the zebra females will flatten their ears and open their mouths when receptive.
