we drove through the desert for hours
night fell like a curtain
and a chain
immediate and complete
all the beautiful black hues
forehead against cool glass
and eyes outside the sway
up into sublime dry heaven
this i saw then
came a fairground in the sky
with frosted rides in faraway clear,
there,
flocked, the stars played,
they winked,
diamond veined and
distance electric,
laced
netted
studded
a milk-pearled blanket,
crystal crochet,
clustered charms, pinned
pointed beads
black and silver marcasites
set and settled
so many rosaries
in my desert sky
i wished then that i could show you
massive herds consisting of tens of thousands of zebras perform one of the world's most awe-inspiring migrations across the serengeti plains.
