Chapter 6

I was confused.

Pure and undeniable confusion. Nothing made sense to me, nothing. Except maybe that the pain had finally ceased.

As I realized this, I opened my eyes to the scene that would await me. I was underwater. And breathing. And everything was clear and colorful through my eyes. Breathtaking rainbow coral swarmed with brilliantly colored underwater creatures. Everything was crystal clear and brightly shinning in the sunlight. All of it was beautiful, regarding it all in motion, while I was motionless in the water completely at ease from pain and struggles.

But the confusion was brought on from the block in my head.

I didn't know who I was, or even what my name was. I didn't know where I was or if I was supposed to be somewhere, or even if someone was looking for me - or maybe I was exactly where I was supposed to be, and I just failed to comprehend any of my surroundings and feelings.

But it was the fact that I could not even remember a name that had me completely bewildered.

Bemused and disoriented, I looked around at the beautiful rainbow surroundings, and decided that I needed to find out where I was exactly. My first reaction was to go to the surface.

My whole body felt sore and tight, nowhere near as painful as it had been, but rather more an uncomfortable itch that you couldn't reach for some strange reason.

As I swam myself towards the surface, I managed to pull myself onto a rock above the water, though the first attempt, because of my sore limbs, I failed to get far, losing my grip and falling back into the water, but my second attempt brought me to the top of the rock, covered with shells and water plants, surrounded by deep blue water. As I caught my breath from my struggle, I looked around to interpret my surroundings.

I was a few yards away from the edge of a beach, and beyond that was a beautiful rainforest, thick and imposing. Even though I could identify my setting, I couldn't recognize anything as familiar, or rather; there was nothing I could identify to help me remember how I got here. Nothing that could help me know where I was in particular, either. I buried my face in my palms in confusion, rubbing my fingers against my closed eyes.

My mind still seemed to be blank, and every moment I tried thinking into it, my head would throb in frustration, aching in dispute. And then, as I lifted my heads slightly, at the corner of my eye, the sunlight caught the reflection of something, leaving me momentarily blind. I looked over to the object, making out a small golden pendant caught on a rock only some feet away from me.

I quickly flung myself into the water and swam over to the rock, holding myself balanced and snatching the pendant in my hands. The small waves of the ocean were gently rocking me back and forth as I stared at the tiny pendant. It was a necklace, I remarked - a small knotted figurine in the shape of a heart. It was beautiful and a deep gold in color, and gazing at this object made a small trigger in my mind click. It was mine...and someone special had given it to me.

But from whom or where were my questions. Was it from someone who cared about me? Were they looking for me? Who were they? The questions filled my mind as I pulled myself up onto the rock. My clothes were nearly non-existent, ripped and torn in many places, making it completely unidentifiable of what it had once been. The warm air breezed off the waves and an invisible force seemed to push me toward the shore.
