Lewis

The doorbell rang on Friday night. Lewis glanced suspiciously over at the door.

“Lewis, be a lad and get that for me will you?” He heard his mother yell from down the hall. He groaned and got up off the couch. He opened his door and saw her long brown hair flick as she turned to walk down the porch steps.

“Hayz, What are you doing here?” he stepped out the door and onto the porch. The dimming light hanging from the ceiling flickered. She stopped and turned towards him. Even in the dim light he could see the silver tracks of tears that traced her cheeks. He reached out towards her as she fell to her knees in front of him. She sobbed. He stared down at her, thoughts racing through his mind like a railway. .

“I shouldn't have come, I'm so sorry, please, don't look at me,” Hayley sobbed, “I look terrible!” Lewis shook his head slowly and bent down until he was close to her ear. He brushed her damp, brown hair over her ear and whispered to her,

“You are beautiful,” Lewis pressed his lips gently on her fair, supple cheek. That was the first time he had ever kissed her. He was full of mixed emotions and couldn’t get Hayley off his mind. Day and night he had dreamed of them being together but he was too scared that he would ruin their relationship so he never did anything about it. On Friday night his opportunity finally arrived, she was vulnerable and right there. He couldn’t resist her anymore. Her helpless gaze, her green eyes. Lewis had melted into them and didn’t plan on coming out. So he took his chance.

Hayley was beautiful, she’d grown over the December holidays and she was even more gorgeous than he remembered. The starting of Grade nine she had a new boyfriend, Jayson. He was the typical babe magnet, big, buff, rugby player. Hayley adored him but not much can be said about how he treated her. She was just another girl that could wear his scruffy rugby jersey and stand in the bleachers, cheering him on. Lewis couldn’t help but clench his fists when he saw her looking at him with so much love. Why couldn’t he do it? Why couldn’t he just go up to her and tell her how he really felt? Their relationship, that’s why, their relationship would sink faster than the Titanic and he couldn’t bear that. He couldn’t lose her now, not after all those years.

Lewis had planned it all, he would find her in the corridors and he would kiss her properly, not on the cheek this time. First period was a killer. He could barely focus on what Mr Young, his physics teacher, was saying. All he could think about was Hayley. He reached into his shirt pocket and grabbed a handful of peppermints and shovelled them into his mouth. Nate nudged him in the ribs.

“Ow! What’s your problem, Nate?” Mr Young cleared his throat. Nate cocked his head in the direction of Mr Young’s table.

“Mr Parker, get your head out of the clouds and answer my question, son.” Lewis flushed with embarrassment and didn’t make a sound as his eyes flicked towards Nate, in need of help.

“I…I’m sorry Sir.” He blushed furiously.

“That’s more like it Mr Parker. Right, homework for tomorrow…” his voice carried on but Lewis didn’t hear anything else he said. Knowing Nate, he would be fully informed later.

He sauntered towards her and stopped really close to her, Hayley grinned like a Cheshire Cat. Lewis scooped her up in a hug that nearly took his breath away. He never wanted that to end, that satisfying squeeze. But he drew away, just enough to face her. He breathed out a big sigh and smiled softly. He stared at her, adoringly. Now was his chance, it was almost too good to be true. He put his hands on her cheeks and kissed her on the lips, gently but passionately. Hayley stood on her tip-toes as he tugged her upwards.

“Call you later okay?” Lewis let her go and hugged her one last time before he disappeared into the crowd. He did it. He finally did it and it felt overwhelming.
