I'm one in four-hundred thousand soldiers. I'm also one of the lucky ones who survived the Battle of Dunkirk and it's not something I want to celebrate.

We weren't victorious; we let our country down.

While my regimental brothers sacrificed their lives in the air, on land and at sea, I survived only to live with the shame.

Retreating from the enemy and hoping they didn't bomb or shoot us while we were hiding and trying to escape is something that will haunt me forever. I wish I could've been amongst the brave, my brothers, who fought with their last breath, but for some reason, I'm still here.

And I feel guilty.

My life has changed; I've changed as a person, and I'm anxious to see what happens when I return home. I wonder how I'll adjust to civilian life, how I'll cope going to sleep and waking up without hearing gunfire and more importantly, how I'll live with the shame.

I survived the war, but I'm afraid I've entered another one just by making it home.
