Chapter 8

Iliana’s POV

After having grabbed our food and settling at a table that was obviously surrounded by jocks, I remained quiet, chewing bites from my turkey sandwich and randomly dipping it in my cheddar broccoli soup. I knew the guys were trying to talk to me, but thankfully Cassidy and Trinton kept changing the topic on them.

I looked up when I felt a hand on my lower arm and straight into the most amazingly bright emerald green eyes I have ever seen. I focused on the face as a whole and realized this guy was GORGEOUS. His facial features were comparable to that of a Greek God. He was smiling at me and I couldn’t help but return it.

“I’m Gentry,” he never held out his hand, I guess Trinton had told him about my whole ‘no touchy’ thing.

“Ana,” I replied, barely a whisper.

Cassidy perked up. “You spoke!” This caused Trinton to look at me as well and eventually the whole table was staring at me.

“I do know how, you know,” I replied, still barely above a whisper. Even then, it was unusual for me to talk in that manner. These people were already starting to change me.

Cassidy and Trinton just smiled. Everyone else decided that since I could talk to Gentry and Cassidy, I should be able to talk to them as well. It took a while, but once they realized I had relapsed into silence once again, they gave up and turned back to the conversation they had been in before the sudden appearance of my voice.

“So…” Cassidy started off, drawing out the word to pull my attention to her. “Where are you from?”

“Jersey.”

“Ok… What part?” This was Trinton.

“Hopewell.”

“Never heard of it.” Gentry piped in

“Not many have.”

I could feel them leaning towards me to hear my words, but I didn’t raise my voice any. Gentry, having been in the seat on my left while Cassidy was on my right, leaned in close and asked, “So, what made you move here?”

He was so close I could feel his breath across my neck and it made me shiver. Not in an unpleasant way, but it wasn’t one of those take your breath away, pulse racing, sweaty palms kind of way either, you know what I mean? It was minty, at least. Good oral hygiene, that’s always a plus.

“I had no other choice.”

“What’s that mean?” Cassidy asked me.

“Cass, if she wanted to say, then she would have. Maybe once she gets to know us better,” Trinton chimed in. I gave him a grateful smile and received a white toothed grin in return. All of these guys had good oral hygiene. I looked around and realized that was an absolute fact. Everyone had perfect smiles.

I was pulled out of my thoughts as a cold sticky liquid ran down my hair and face. I sat frozen to the spot as a voice behind me stated simply:

“Stay away from my man, you slut.”

Suddenly Gentry leapt from his seat and dragged whoever was behind me away from the table with her complaining about me being a man-stealing slut the whole way. I had no clue what exactly had just happened or why. All I knew was that once again, all eyes were on me and laughter was starting to spread across the cafeteria. Trinton stood quickly, knocking his chair to the floor behind him. The loud noise shocked the cafeteria to silence once again.
