I watched her stand.

With her toes over the edge.

Of a lake.

I knew she could do anything.

I knew she couldn't swim.

What if she fell in?

She spread her arms wide.

And tilted her head back.

Like a bird ready to fly.

She looked over at me.

With shining bright eyes.

She smiled playfully at me.

I didn't have time.

To ponder what it meant.

Because she jumped.

Her laughter disappeared under with a splash.

And I had no choice.

But to jump in too.

Underneath it was dark.

Underneath it was cold.

Her. I could not see.

I called her name franticly.

Waiting for an answer.

Praying for her presence.

Finally I caught sight of her.

Coughing and sputtering.

Trying to stay afloat.

I went to her.

And wrapped my arms around her.

Confused and slightly irritated.

"What was that for?" I asked.

She shivered.

But I heard her laughing.

"Oh, you're a laugh and a half!"

She laughed and laughed.

And I didn't understand.

"That didn't answer my question."

I narrowed my eyes.

Because she was laughing at me.

She finally stopped laughing.

Long enough to look at me.

And smirk at me.

I watched her lips.

Say the words.

The answer I didn't expect to hear.

"I jumped in

Simply because,

I knew you'd jump in after me."
