I never had someone to stand up for me, they say. All teary eyed and choked up, they say, they never had someone to fight their battles. Never had someone to stand as their shield. Choking on words and swallowing sorrow, I see them backing away from this very fight. I see them slowly back away, and finally leave.
You surprised me.
I thought without someone to fight for you, you might learn, to fight for yourself.
