Hazel's POV

I was out on my back deck, calmly swaying back and forth on the porch swing with Haley. After her play date with Kayla and my outing with Roger, Diggy, and Paris we decided to end our day out on the back deck. We were out here for a few hours just talking, playing on her DS, and snacking on food our mom brought of for us throughout the day. My mind would constantly think about what happened to him and if he was alright. Roger wouldn't explain much but he said that everything's good. I have no clue what happened, but whatever it was, I sure do hope that he's okay.

The sun began to set and it began to get chilly. The sudden bitter and cold air caused goosebumps to form on my arms. I looked down at Haley, who was extremely Immersed in her game, and judging from her goosebumps, it was clear that she was cold too.

"Ready to go inside? It's getting cold." I asked her as I wrapped my arms around myself in hopes of getting warm.

"Noooo." She whined, still focusing on her game.

I rolled my eyes, knowing she would want to stay outside. Just as I was getting up to get some jackets, I felt something drape over my body, instantly providing me warmth.

"You guys looked a little cold." Jelani said, with a smirk on his face.

"Thanks Lani." Haley said. Lani was her knick name for Jelani.

"Such a sweetheart." I heard my mom call out. I turned to see her standing by the door. "I got called in at the hospital, so I'm heading out. You guys behave yourselves." She said.

"Okay, mom. Love you."

"Love you too, sweetheart."

After being slightly startled, I greeted him with a smile. "Thank you." I told Haley to scoot over so there would be room for Jelani. I patted next to the empty spot where he sat.

I adjusted the blanket over Haley and I turned to face Jelani. "What are you doing here?"

"Do you not want me to be here?" He said half jokingly.

"Of course she wants you to be here, I mean you are her boyf-" I turned around to put my hand over her mouth in a heartbeat.

When I say everyone teases us about this, I mean everyone.

I gave her a look and removed my hand and she giggled knowingly. I turned to face Jelani again who was laughing at Haley's comment.

"Anyway," I started. "You know I didn't mean it like that." I said continuing our conversation.

"I just wanted to come by. I missed y'all." He grinned.

I laughed.

"Not gonna lie, it was you who I really missed."

I could feel myself blushing, and rolled my eyes jokingly. "I guess I missed you too."

"Hey! What about me Lani?" Haley pouted, finally putting her game down and hopping off of the swing to face him.

"Of course I missed you!" He pulled her into a hug and whispered so that I could hear, "Can you keep a secret? I missed you more than I missed Hazel."

She giggled and stuck her tongue out at me and I fake pouted.

"I better go back over there before she gets jealous." She whispered.

"I think you're right, I can see her getting jealous now." He chuckled.

She laughed as she hopped back onto her seat, picking up her DS.

"You're so silly." I smiled.

"And what did you mean "you guess you missed me too"?"

I shrugged. "I mean we saw each other not too long ago."

"Just say that you missed me. I know you did."

"Nah." I said nonchalantly, and leaned back on the swing.

I couldn't help but to let out obnoxious laughs when Jelani began tickling me.

"S-stop!" I stuttered, laughing uncontrollably.

"Say you missed me."

"No!" I said inbetween laughter.

I tossed and turned until I found strength to get up. I let out the last laugh and let out uneven breaths. Once I returned to normal I put on a serious face. "Okay. I'll say it."

Jelani smiled, waiting patiently.

I sighed, walking back over to the swing. "I missed you too." I said barely above a whisper.

He cupped his hand over his ear, jokingly.

"I missed you. You know that." I said clearly.

"I wanted to hear it." He shrugged, patting the spot next to him where I sat.

"I'm going inside." Haley said, hopping off the swing. As she turned to leave she sang "Jelani and Hazel sitting in a tree..."

I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't help but to laugh. Jelani laughed as well.

"I also stopped by because I just really need a friend right now..." He said with a suddenly melancholy tone etched into his voice.

"Is everything okay?" I began to get concerned.

"I'm good. As long as I have you to keep me company and I'll be fine."

"Are you sure? You don't want to talk about it? Is there anything I can do?" It truly upsets me when a loved one is unhappy. Their happiness is mine and my heart just couldn't handle it if anyone is down.

"You're the cutest." He said, with a smile. "I'm good though, I promise. Is there enough room for me?" Jelani asked, referring to the blanket.

I smiled, still concerned although he said he was alright. I adjusted the blanket over us and sat in silence for a while. I really enjoyed his company, even when we could be doing nothing. There was never really an awkward moment or any discomfort. I just feel at peace with him.

I looked up at him and smiled at my best friend. He was not aware of me looking at him, he was looking at the sky as the moonlight beamed in his face perfectly. To say he was handsome would be an understatement.

"What?" He said with a smile plastered on his face, snapping me out of my trance. I didn't realize I was starring for so long.

I simply shrugged and smiled.

"I have to tell you something important tomorrow." He stated.

"Why tomorrow? Now I want to know. You can't do that. Tell me."

"Tomorrow."

I rolled my eyes and rested my head on his chest. "Fine."

The next morning we all piled into my mom's car, headed to our local hospital where she worked as a nurse. I aspired to be a nurse as well so Sometimes I helped out there for extra credit/community service hours and simply for the joy of it. I would stay here for a few hours and then meet up with Jelani later.

We arrived at the hospital and we put Haley in the play center while we worked. Usually I just shadowed my mom, following her around, helping whenever I could.

"Okay Hazel, they ran some tests on a patient yesterday, here are the papers." She handed me a few papers.

"We're going to just place the results in the patients file which you know, is on the room door."

I followed her to the patients room, rolling my eyes discreetly. I hated doing simple, pointless tasks. She had to assist me doing his because I am not allowed to view the patients results or files since they are strictly confidential.

We arrived at the room, in which a small, petite girl lay in her bed, averted her eyes to us.

"Hello, honey, we are just here to drop off your test results." My mom smiled.

The girl gave a weak smile.

"I assure you that everything is fine and there is no need to worry, dear. And we are contacting your mother every second of the way just like you asked." My mother assured. I slipped the papers into a mamilla folder.

"Okay, thank you."She said.

"And if you needed some company, my daughter is a great person to talk to."

I didn't mind doing this at all, but my mom could have at least told me. What if she doesn't want any company, that would be awkward. Thanks for telling me this, mom.

"Great, I'd love that." She smiled.

I smiled back at her, thankful for her friendliness. I sat on a chair next to her hospital bed.

"Okay, I'll be heading out." My mom announced.

There was a slight awkward silence before I decided to break it.

"I'm Hazel, and your name?"
"You can call me Jay."

"Nice to meet you, Jay." I smiled.

"Nice to meet you too."

"Is there anything I can get for you? Any food, anything?"

"I'm actually a little thirsty, would you mind getting me some water?" She asked.

"Sure." I smiled, and got up from the chair. I heard her groan and she showcased her dying phone.

I lightly laughed. "Do you want me to put it on the charger?"

"You've been here for all of two minutes and I have you slaving." She said jokingly.

"It's the least I can do, I don't mind at all." I assured.

"My charger is right there," she pointed to a nearby outlet. "Thank you so much." She said handing me her phone.

"No problem." I plugged her phone in and went to get some water for her.

After retrieving her water and myself some snacks, I sauntered back into the room.

"Thank you."

For the next few hours, Jay and I talked and definitely loosened up to each other. We even exchanged numbers and planned to hang out once she's healed. I found out she was in a minor car accident, has a few fractured bones, and a few bruises, but overall she's okay.

Her phone suddenly began ringing and I quickly handed it to her.

"Mom, I'm fine. The doctors talked to you about the tests right?"

......

"It's okay mom, I know you're busy. I'll be okay."

......

"I know, it was stupid. I just really wanted it to be a surprise...everything that I missed can be rescheduled."

.....

"Okay mom. Love you too. Bye."

"
Everything okay?" I asked. She had an agitated look on her face after that phone call.

"All good." She smiled.

Jelani Hey, I didn't realize I would be so busy today so how about tomorrow?

Me That's fine

Well that's a downer. I was really eager to hear what he needed to tell me.

"What did he do?" Jay asked knowingly, with a smirk on her face. Was I that obvious?

I couldn't help but to laugh and shake my head.

"Come on, I know you wanna talk about it."

I heavily sighed. "It's nothing really. It's not even like that. See he's just a really close friend but we planned to see each other today and he kind of bailed out on me. I'm good though."

"She say he's just a friend, she say he's just a friend." She mumbled with a smirk on her face.

"You're a mess!" I laughed.

"You know he's more than just a close friend. I can tell. I bet everyone else but you guys can tell too."

"How many times have I heard that." I said.

"Just out of curiosity....are there any feelings?" She said with an eager smile on her face.

I sheepishly smiled and looked down. "He's my best friend."

"That wasn't my question."

"Okay." I sighed, shocked at what was about to come out of my mouth.

"Sometimes I think he likes me."

She squealed excitedly. "And you?" She asked, more eager than ever.

"I don't know, maybe just a tad." I admitted. And that was the honest truth.

"Aw, this sounds so cute."

I laughed at how intrigued she was in the dull "love story".

Jelani Are you sure? I'm sorry...If I could I would drop everything I'm doing to see you gorgeous

I didn't realize I "awwww'd" out loud, because Jay asked what happened, and I told her.

"There are definitely feelings!" She said.

I simply shrugged and responded.

Me it's okay, I promise :)

"This reminds me a lot of my relatio-"

Just then I heard the door open.

"You ready?" She asked.

I nodded and got up from the chair.

"It was so nice meeting you new best friend." Jay said, opening her arms.

I gently hugged her, careful not to hurt her. "You too, text me!"I told her.

On our way out we picked up Haley from the kids center and made our way back home.

"Sweetheart, I want you to go out to the back." My mom said as we walked into the house.

"Okay..." I said in confusion.

"I wanna come too!" Haley exclaimed, with a sneaky grin on her face, latching into my hand.

I laughed thinking to myself, what are these two up to?

I slid open the door and stepped out onto the back deck, where he stood. He had a nice button down shirt and tie with a pair of jeans. His smile was breathtakingly beautiful as he approached me, nervously.

"I hope you really didn't think I would bail out on you?"

I was speechless at everything that was going on and I honestly just stood there.

He pulled roses from behind his back. "These are for you."

"Thank you, Jelani." I managed to say, retrieving the roses.

"So remember what I was telling you about yesterday? I uh..." He nervously chuckled and looked down.

"I wanted to ask...."

"Just hurry up and ask already, Lani, my gosh!" Haley cried out from behind.

That caused us both to laugh.

"Okay, so...."
