Chapter 49: something special
-Bex p.o.v.-

It was three weeks. Three whole weeks. Twenty-one days. Many hours and even more minutes.

No one had come. Not one single person had come for her. She was stuck in the house with the death-munchers and the newest killer. No one had come to save her like she thought they would.

She had thought for countless hours at night, staring at the ceiling and contemplating the reason that they wouldn't come to save her.

First she wondered when they would finally notice her to be missing. Then if they would be able to find out what had happened. Next, when they would finally burst through the doors and save her. And finally, if they would come at all.

"Morning sweetheart." Rosier poked his head into the room. "Breakfast is ready."

"Thanks Rosier." I followed him down, sitting in the spot I usually sat in.

Tom made his appearance, two plates of food in his hands. He wished me a good morning and sat beside me.

In the middle of cutting up my pancakes I turned to Tom. "Hey Tom? Can I go outside today?"

"Outside?" He asked, confusion taking over his expression. "You don't like the weather though," he trailed off.

"Yeah, but I haven't been outside for a long time." I frowned, "I just want to spend a little time outside."

He searched my face, looking for something, "alright, you can go outside, but you must stay on my property with Rosier as your escort."

"Thanks Tom." I grinned at the thought of open air.

After breakfast Tom instructed Rosier on the situation. Rosier agreed reluctantly, not wanting to miss the meeting that was set up as soon as possible. But when Tom informed him that he would be filled in and rewarded for taking me out, he nodded enthusiastically. He even got me my jacket that had been taken when I arrived at the house.

Rosier then lead me to the backdoor, to my chance at leaving this place.

Of course I had thought of leaving many times, I even stood in front of the door, thinking about it. But there was some invisible force, something deep within me, that didn't allow me to leave. This unknown force seemed to not be there as Rosier swiftly opened the door and held it open for me.

Tentatively I stepped up to the doorjamb, peering out into the open grounds. Tom's property was wide and large, it seemed to go on forever, the only thing stoping it from continuing on was an iron fence surrounding the property line.

All at once, I darted out of the house and into the snow. I trampled through the snow, spun around, and ducked down, throwing fistfuls of snow into the air. Giggles erupted from my mouth, filling the chilly air.

Musical chuckles mixed with mine, next to the doorway stood Tom, Rosier next to him. "Have fun, I'll come for you if you aren't already in by the time my meeting is over." He was leaning against the doorframe, a smirk dancing on his lips, "though you shouldn't stay out that long. I wouldn't want you to get sick."

With that he left, leaving Rosier as my escort.

It was strange. I, Bex Dumbledore, was actually out of the warmth and coziness of a house and into the harsh, cold weather of the winter outdoors. Of my own free will. Never would I have asked to go outside, not in the middle of winter. But things had changed.

Maybe it was the fact that I was surrounded by killers and coldblooded murderers and I just wanted to get away from them. Or maybe being around a bunch of criminals made snow seem not as bad, even inviting in a way.

But whatever it was; there was no doubt. Everything had changed.

Thirty minutes later, I was giggling away, messing around in the snow, actually relaxed.

"Alright, let's go inside, I'll make you some hot chocolate." Rosier promised grinning down at me from where he stood on the patio, watching me play around.

"Okay!" I called, slowly making my way towards the back patio from where I had been trying to make a snowman near the middle of Tom's large yard.

On my way to where Rosier was standing I placed my hands in my pockets. The insides of the jacket were as soft as I remembered. My fingers grazed a smooth surface, surrounded by the soft fabric of the jacket.

Confusion set within me, what was in my pocket? I wrapped my hand around the object, holding it firmly within my grasp. I wouldn't be letting this go.

Rosier kept his promise. When we made it into the house he started immediately on making hot chocolate, clanking around in the kitchen.

With the new distraction in place, I quickly shoved the mystery object into my jeans pocket. Not able to get a peek at what it was, only a flash of something silver.

The object seemed to burn through the fabric and set fire against my skin. But I ignored it. I couldn't let anyone know that I had something.

As if nothing happened, I slipped off my jacket, putting it on the back of the stool. I pulled off my shoes, making sure that I didn't track any snow inside, and placed them at the doorway.

"Here you are," Rosier put a mug of dark liquid on the counter for me.

"Thanks Rosier," I smiled, taking a seat in front of the mug. The hot chocolate was delicious, but I couldn't savor it, not with the object's heat matching my own body temperature, stinging against my skin.

"You sure did drink that up," Rosier commented with a chuckle as I stood, placing the mug in the sink.

"Yes, I'm feeling a little tired from all the playing outside, I think I'm going to go take a nap." I informed him.

Rosier seemed to see right through my lie. "Really?" He questioned, looking at me through narrowed eyes.

"Yeah." I said in the most nonchalant voice I could manage.

He looked at me for a second, searching my face. "Alright, have a nice nap. I'll come up for you at lunch time."

"Thank you Rosier." I smiled, showing my thanks before calmly exiting the room. The second I was away from the kitchen, I darted up the stairs. To the safety of the guest room.

Being sure to close the door tightly, I stuffed my hand down my pocket. My fingers connected with the smooth silver of the small object. Pulling it from my jeans pocket, it revealed to be a ring.

The real question was how it had gotten there, though. Did someone put it in there?

"Look in the pocket," Sirius' voice filled my mind.

He told me that he had put it in there, he was hinting at it before Christmas even happened. Sirius Black has been with me this entire time. Even when I thought I was alone.

The ring had a crumpled piece of paper wrapped around it, most likely from being shoved into my pocket. The ring was a dazzling silver, a simple band, with an engraved message on it. It was not a figment of my imagination, the ring was burning, radiating with heat.

I tore my eyes to the piece of parchment first. In an elegant scrawl it read: Bex, I didn't know what to get you. Something that would mean something; something to keep with you; something special. At least a little special compared to how much you mean to me. I know we fight all the time, it seems as if we hate each other, but truly, you'll never be able to understand how much you mean to me. I'm here for you. At any time, any place, all you have to do is say the words engraved on the ring. I'll be there for you. Sirius.

Something inside me fluttered. My heart ached with sudden yearning.

But did I really want to? He did hurt me. He was the reason that I ran from James' house. He was the reason I was able to be kidnapped. He was the reason that I was stuck here. But he would also be the reason for me being saved if I did reach out to him through the ring.

The thin band of the ring was engraved with two simple words. Me Parler. The words were French, translating to Speak to Me.

I thought for a second, wondering what I should do. With a final thought, I shoved the ring and paper back into my pocket.

I don't need help. I don't need him. I don't need anyone. I can do this myself. Tom will let me out soon. I'll get out without any of their help.

But one thing is for sure, the ring was something special.
