67. Kyrielle — Rainbow, Forgiveness

My words are scattered without rhyme
   Or reason on the winds of woe;
Stopping the writing in the meantime,
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

The colors flash across my brain,
   After the stormy winds that blow
Die down upon the window pane:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

The world outside is often cruel,
   As all of you who write will know,
Making you feel like you're a fool:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

But in the darkness that is life
   Appears a certain afterglow
That reaches past the human strife:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

For as the blowing tempests give
   The shock of a thunderous row,
Through the rains they can forgive:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

The rains, like tears upon earth's face,
   Wash out the sorrows of the foe
That makes us cry in our disgrace:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

My love, forgive this vassal wretch
   The hurtful curses that I sow;
Although your love I cannot fetch,
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

So where is that celestial arc
   After the melancholy rains go?
I'm left still thinking in the dark;
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

But now a spark of inspiration
   Lights up my brain with what I owe
Unto myself in my own station:
   I sit back thinking of the rainbow.

"Oh, wallow not in your distress
   Over your sorrows—live and grow;
You are your rainbow of forgiveness!"
   I sit back thinking of my rainbow.
