The 99 Poem Challenge
Fox-Trot-9
6. Refrain — Partners in Crime
The time will slide, and hate will fade,
And things won't always stay the same.
These bonds are frail, and friends are made
Of fickle bonds in friendship's game.
But how it seems a simple sport,
A game that we could play and win,
A game that's always far too short,
A game between two next of kin.
But such a game is time well spent;
We'd hide and scheme and stalk and creep;
We'd sin and laugh and not repent
Our crimes—we're always in too deep.
But friendship's loyalty is such,
That I won't care for time too much.
For friends are friends, and brothers we,
Resisting change and love and time;
Both you and I two brothers be,
No matter what the wrong or crime.
Oh, how it seems a simple sport,
A game that we could play and win,
A game that's always far too short,
A game between two next of kin.
But such a game is time well spent;
We'd hide and scheme and stalk and creep;
We'd sin and laugh and not repent
Our crimes—we're always in too deep.
But friendship's loyalty is such,
That I won't care for time too much.
And crime with crime, we both shall spend
The night inside this chilly cell;
But bunk to bunk, and friend to friend,
I think it's not too much a Hell.
Because this is a simple sport,
A game that we could play and win,
A game that's always far too short,
A game between two next of kin.
But such a game is time well spent;
We'd hide and scheme and stalk and creep;
We'd sin and laugh and not repent
Our crimes—we're always in too deep.
But friendship's loyalty is such,
That I won't care for time too much.
For time is time, and sport is sport,
And time we spend we play our game;
For life's a game, and life is short:
So partners we, in crime and blame.
