66. Villonnet — The Real Meaning of Progress

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
—Old Saying

The madness of the scientific brain
   Begins upon the sunny side of life,
   Wherein the cut of progress from its knife
Is just a shallow sacrifice for gain.

Now come advancements in technology
   With promises of truth upon the air,
   Whereon are fashioned theories everywhere
Explaining all the things we think and see.

The search for truth becomes the search for power
   Over the hearts and minds of everyone,
   A treasure always sought but never won;
Now do you see upon the fated hour

The madness of the scientific brain?
   We're led to think such madness in our strife
Is just a shallow sacrifice for gain!
