Chapter 30

       Both Violet and Tyler's head snapped to the bed that occupied Justin. He was indeed awake and moving around. They weren't allowed in the CDU at this moment, so they all stood outside, anxiously waiting for the doctor. A nurse had gone in to check on him, and he angrily fought anything she tried to do to him. She went to do something as simple as checking his vitals, and he would yank his arm away when she tried to touch him. She tried to get him to let her check his wounds, but he refused that too. He was just so stupidly hard-headed.

"Until I can check his heart rate, temperature, etcetera, I won't know if he's internally okay. He seems to be in good shape, just refusing a check-up. Maybe he'll let the doctor do all that."

"Okay," Tyler murmured to the nurse. "Thank you."

She disappeared back into the room and helped other patients and Violet watched as Justin ripped away his IV and stood up. He immediately winced, and sat back onto the bed.

"What is he doing? He's gonna hurt himself!" Violet shouted. Tyler held her back from rushing inside the room and potentially preventing her from getting kicked out of the hospital. She watched as the nurse went over to his side, and laid him back down. He didn't seem to object and the nurse informed him about the dangers of too much movement, again.

The doctor, who could not have taken any longer, entered and spoke to Justin. He told him all about what happened, what they removed, how the surgery went, and what the plan was now. Justin seemed to listen for once and allowed the doctor to check up on him. He eventually exited the room and spoke with Violet, Tyler, and Hailey.

"We're going to transfer him to a more private room where he'll be able to relax. He's going to need to stay for maybe tonight, while we watch those stitches. You're more than welcome to stay, but no more than one visitor passed visiting hours."

This was it. Violet was going to be able to see Justin with his stubborn ass. She would be able to run her fingers through his hair, and cry because she was scared he was somehow going to slip into a coma and die. She would be able to dance her fingertips along the ink of his arms like she loved to do, and listen to all he had to say. Her heart leaped in her chest.

But surprisingly, Violet wasn't the first person to greet Justin. She was actually the last. She wanted to give Tyler and his family a chance to spend time with him before she went in and started bawling her eyes out. But as soon as Tyler invited her in, everything seemed to be spinning.

She timidly stepped inside the room, Justin was laying in the hospital bed, a content smile on his face, Dana holding his hand while reading him a card she had gotten him, and everyone else just admiring. A tear had slipped from Violet's eye and she quickly wiped it away. She wasn't able to decipher if it was from sadness or relief, but Justin saw the movement from the corner of his eyes and his head whipped in her direction. She shyly smiled, keeping her distance, not sure if he even wanted to see her yet. He seemed happy to be with Dana right now.

"Vi," he whispered. His eyes wandered over her whole body, noticing the bandages around her arm and leg, the scratches on her face, and the blood all over her shirt. His breathing became erratic and he bit his tongue from what he was about to say. Dana was right next to him, he couldn't lash out. Speaking of Dana, she'd finished reading the card and her parents took her out of the room after a soft forehead kiss from Justin. "I'm so sorry this happened to you," he finally said once the door was closed.

Violet shook her head and smiled with glossy eyes. "No, don't you worry about that. Be glad you're alive." She slowly made her way to his side, and he looked up at her.

Hailey and Tyler watched the both of them and couldn't believe how Justin had changed so much in the presence of Violet. He was vulnerable now. No wonder the drive-by shooting had taken him by surprise.
