A Fleeting Thought

I stand before him,
His full attention trained on me.
I look up,
Staring him in the eye.
I open my mouth
To speak three simple words.
"I..." I begin, "I..."

But the words escape me.
They run circles around me,
Tumbling and twirling,
Cruelly mischievous,
Saying "Catch me if you can."

Why can't I tell him
How I feel?
Why do the words evade me?
Am I meant to be alone,
Or something less than human?
I want to change, I need to.
I need to tell him how I feel...

As I look him in the eye,
I slowly build the courage to speak.
"I...I..."
But the words leave me once more.
"I-I'm sorry," I say,
As I turn and run away.
"Wait!" He calls,
But it's too late.
Wiping my eyes,
I run away, far away,
Never stopping 'til the end of time.
