“Avery?” A soft voice called, knocking on the door gently.

My eyes widened with shock. Out of desperation, I hissed “Closet!” and pointed frantically towards it. He nodded moving swiftly and silently towards it.

I pulled back the covers, scrambling under. I ruffled my hair slightly, trying to appear as if I had been sleeping, “Yes, Grandma?”

She opened the door, poking her head in, “Is there someone in here with you?”

“No, why would there be?” I faked a confused expression, all the while my heart pounding in my chest furiously.

“I thought I heard voices…” Her eyes moved around the room slowly, scanning every detail, “Why is your wind open?”

I glanced over to it in surprise. I hadn’t realized no one had shut it. I quickly covered it up, “I thought it was too stuffy in my room.”

“Then turn the AC on. I don’t need any more bugs coming into my house than I already have. You know how I don’t like them.” She pursed her lips in annoyance.

                “Sorry, Grandma.”

“It’s alright. Are you being honest with me that there is no one in here?”

I looked her in the eyes, forcing myself to keep a straight face. “I’m positive. I had the radio going in the background. That might’ve been it.”

Her eyes moved over to the alarm clock that doubled as a radio by my bed. To prove my point, I turned the radio on. Luck was on my side as it was a talk-show hour instead of the normal music hour. After a few moments, I turned it off, leaving us in silence again.

“Please keep it quiet then, if you’re going to listen to it. I’m trying to sleep in the room over.” She said.

“I will. You usually don’t hear this.” As if this happened every evening…

“I didn’t have my white noise maker on this evening.”

                “That’s why.”

“I guess I’ll have to turn it back on.”

                I smiled gratefully.

She backed out of the doorway, making as if to leave, “Alright. Please lower your volume on your radio. I’m going to go to sleep. Goodnight, Avery, I love you.”

                “Love you too Grandma.”

She closed the door with a smile.

I waited silently, counting in my head to twenty before I made any movement towards the closet.

I threw the doors open, an accusing look on my face. Reaching in blindly to the darkness, I stretched my fingers out to brush the front of him. My eyes widened with surprise when instead they touched the back of the wall.

                “Looking for me?”

I whirled around sharply to see him relaxing on my bed once more. He had one hand behind his head, the other resting on his stomach. His lips were pulled into a satisfied grin. I closed my closet doors, walking towards my bed.
