Chapter 2:

Dinner was going so slow and the whole time I could feel D'Angelo's eyes on me as I stared down at my plate and ate keeping to myself instead of getting involved in conversation like I usually would.

I was so uncomfortable under his gaze and I kept fidgeting, the urge to just get up and leave was clawing at me.

Every so often Santo or Michael would nudge me and try to get me to look up because I was being rude, but I couldn't bring myself to join into the conversation. I wouldn't be able to stop myself from looking at D'Angelo.

"So Octavio you never mentioned you had such a close family, I have known you for a long time and never knew the extent of you grandchildren or that you had a beautiful granddaughter" commented Alberto.

I stiffened at his comment and looked up over at my Grandfather. I really didn't want to be the center of attention or the topic of this conversation. I hated being the center of attention, I couldn't stand it, I would much rather keep to myself.

"It never came up Alberto" my Grandfather replied sternly, his eyes cold towards Alberto.

Alberto seemed to avoid the hidden threat behind my Grandfather's eyes and smiled mischievously. My stomach twisted in knots at that smile, I didn't like it there was a hidden agenda behind that smile and I knew this conversation wasn't going to just be forgotten, that smile said it all. I needed a breath of fresh air. I didn't want to be around for the rest of this conversation.

"Nonno may I be excused for a few minutes?" I asked softly.

He turned to me slowly his eyes turning kind. I bit my lips nervously there was a glint in his eyes telling me that he knew how I felt. He was my Grandfather after all and I was his only granddaughter, we were very close, and he could read me like a book.

"Of course cara" he said kindly so to me. I gave him a soft smile as got up placing my napkin on my chair.

"Octavio stiamo avendo la cena, lo sai meglio di lasciare che il suo congedo, ha bisogno di aspettare per tutti di finire" (we are having dinner, you know better than to let her leave, she needs to wait for everyone to finish) my Grandmother hissed, complaining that my Grandfather knew better than to dismiss.

"Rilassarsi cara lei sarà lasciare indietro la ragazza sia" (relax darling she will be back leave the girl be) he replied in a bored tone dismissing her with a wave of his hand.

I bit my lip and gave her an apologetic look as she huffed and sat back in her seat. Everyone else stayed quiet as I straightened my dress and tried to avoid eye contact with D'Angelo. Of course, when I say tried, my attempt was hopeless. My heart jumped as his green eyes held mine. There was a mischievously glint to them as he discreetly licked his lips. My mouth became dry and I bit my lip, butterflies erupting in my stomach.

I took in a deep shaky breath and griped the back of my chair to move it out of the way so I could leave the dining room.

"Grandfather may I be excused to use the bathroom?" D'Angelo's deep voice cut into the silence and my heart skipped a beat. My jaw clenched and my hands curled into fists as I tried to control my nerves. I didn't want to be around D'Angelo because I didn't trust myself around him. The one thing I did know was that he wasn't trying to be excused to use the bathroom.
