Maenya POV

I was called to my father's Chambers that evening.
As I entered, he stood in front of his fireplace and looked back at me, motioning me to come stand next to him. I did.

"I believe I owe you some answers" he said laughing, trying to make light of what was clearly going to be a very serious talk
His smile faded
"Do you remember those stories I would read you when you were younger? When you were a child, when we were on better terms..."

I missed those times
"Yes, I do"

"Do you remember the one about the prince that was promised?" His voice was shaking

I laughed
"Well that was not so much of a story. It sounded more like a prophecy if anything." I looked into the flames and recited what my father had once told me
"From my blood come, the prince that was promised, and his will be the song of ice and Fire"

"That's because it was..." he said quietly looking into the flames, his voice still shaking, rattling like a leaf in the wind

"...what?..."

"Daenys saw the end of Valyria but Aegon saw the end of the world and its only way of survival was for a Targaryen to be seated on the throne..."

"Why are you telling me this?" my voice was now starting to shake

"I don't know... you wonder why I did not name you heir?"

"Can you blame me?"

"On the night of...the funeral"
Sadness pooled in my gut as he said that " a small council meeting was called to discuss my succession" he continued " It was my Hand who suggested that you should be named heir to the throne... I snapped at all of them, claiming that it wasn't the time to have this conversation, and I left, but on my way back to my chambers, I thought 'yes, he's right, you're my first born, you should be heir' but..."

"But what?" I ask quickly, desperate to know why he didn't name me heir

"I had a dream that very same night. I saw you."

"Me?"

"You, Maenya." He said gravely

"Sat on the iron throne with a great white beast behind you, wearing the conquerors crown, wielding his sword and surrounded by the fourteen flames of Valyria. And beneath you lied the bones of your enemies and the blood of your kin"

He looked at me now
"And it scared me... I thought it was a warning that if I named you, the heir then that vision would come true, and after you claimed Meraxes, my fears increased... my fair that you would be a tyrannical, cruel Queen"

"Anwser me this father... if I were a man, would you have interpreted the dream differently?" I asked cautiously, trying to process what I had just been told

The question hung in the air.
He didn't answer, he only looked at me and left.
