CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Absence diminishes mediocre passions and increases great ones, as the wind extinguishes candles and fans fires.”

                                                                  -Francois de La Rochefoucauld

“Mom, extend my greetings to Tita,” ani Ace sabay halik sa pisngi ng Ina.

“What do you mean? Aren’t you coming with us?” takang tanong nito.

“Yes, I am meeting with someone tonight,” he explained.

“Hijo, can’t you cancel your appointment with that someone? They are expecting you.

“I am not the birthday celebrant Mom. The party can go on without me.”

“How about your Dad?” mahinang paalala ng ina.

“What about him?”

She eyed him worriedly. “You know he will not approve this.”

“He never approved anything I do,” he reminded her.

“That’s not true. Your Dad is just looking after your interest,” depensa naman nito sa asawa.

“MY interest huh? Why do I have this feeling that he is more worried for HIS interest and not mine?” Ace said with a scorn.

“Please understand your Dad…He has been in a lot of stress lately,” pagpapaintindi pa rin nito sa anak. “You are our only child, kaya kung anong ginagawa niya, it will be all for you – our son.”

Umiling si Ace. “Mom please. Let’s not talk about Dad. You’re ruining the mood.”

“Is your meeting really that important?”

“It is. I’m the one who set it.”

“Then can’t you just cancel it for the meantime? Set it in another date. Like tomorrow,” proposed ng ina, hoping that he will changed his mind.

“Moommmmm, I said it’s important. Important means IT IS important,” Ace said.

“Is it a girl?”

“A what?”

“Girl. Yung kameeting mo. I bet it’s really a date.”

That made Ace smile.

“Oh my, so it’s really a date? How come you are ditching the Lee’s for a date?” nagtatanong ang matang tumingin sa kanya ang ina. “Renz, I can’t believe I would see you getting serious in a girl!” His mother beamed.

Ace flinched when he heard his name. Only his parents call him by his real name. The rest, they call him by his nickname Ace.

“Who? Who is this girl? I want to meet her,” excited na wika ng ina sa kanya. She kept on blabbering nonstop.
