Chaitra

We enjoyed ourselves a lot in Mehandi and I got my hands painted with Mehndi after all my friends forced me to. I came home and dozed off as soon as I hit the bed. The next morning I woke up early and saw my mobile. I remembered yesterday's incidents. I got a call from Daksh yesterday night. When I called back, he said he wants to meet me tonight but when I said about marriage he said we can meet tomorrow morning. I rushed to Meena's wedding venue. The wedding is in the evening but there will be some or the other ritual going on from morning to evening. I took my outfit for her wedding along with me.

As soon as I reached there Aunty pushed me into Meena's room to help her get ready. Her college friends got her ready and I did her hair. Then she performed Gauri Puja. After that, she is sent to take a rest while we went to have our late lunch. Here come the aunties whom every young girl/boy tries to ignore because the only thing they talk about is MARRIAGE. Either they want you to marry their son/daughter or suggest to you some distant relatives' names whom you met when you were 2 and played with them. I don't understand why they are so much interested in getting people married as if the earth stops rotating if we don't get married.

"Chaitra! Remember me?" Asked an aunt in a green saree. Honestly, I don't. But I can't say that so I chose to smile. I smiled at her and folded my hands in namaste.

"We met when you were just in your mothers' lap. After that, we moved to Haryana and we never got to meet after that. You have grown up." So, you met me when I was like 1 or 2 and expecting me to remember you? Just great! I don't even remember a few of my classmates with whom I studied for nearly 3 to 4 years in my childhood.

"Long time Aunty!" I said unable to find any suitable answer.

"So, when are you getting married? I have a perfect boy in my mind." Here it goes again. I am damn sure the boy she is talking about is completely unaware of the fact that someone bought his wedding proposal for me. I smiled awkwardly not knowing what to say.

"How did you recognize me, Aunty?" I asked to divert the topic but it's my genuine doubt too.

"It's not that difficult. Your mother sent me your brothers' wedding photos." She said. Why mumma? Just why? Where are all my idiot friends and cousins? Why no one is here to save me?

"Would you like to meet the boys' mom?" She asked making my eyes go wide. What the bloody hell! I have to escape from here otherwise this aunty will get me married before my parents get me married to Mr. Chauhan. And, I don't want to marry anyone other than him. Chaithu! Run babe!

"Meena asked me to get something to eat. See you later Aunty!" saying that I dashed out before she can speak another word. I ran to Meena's room where everyone else are joking around. I pushed Akash Anna a little and sat there.

"Somebody get me water please!" I said resting my head on my brother's shoulder.

"And what great work did you do that we will serve you?" Hithen asked in a mocking tone.

"I just escaped from a marriage!" I said rolling my eyes at him.

"What!" Everyone yelled at once forcing me to close my ears.

"What marriage?" Dev bhai asked passing me water which I gulped down in one go.

"One aunty who met me when I was in diapers wants me to marry some boy whom I don't even know and was about to introduce me to his mother.  If it was possible she would have got me married on the same mandap before Meena!" I blabbered leaving them in fits of laughter. Maybe I exaggerated a little but she was an insane man!

"Don't laugh guys! I have stopped attending weddings for this very same reason!" I yelled throwing a pillow at Hithen.

"Guys! Enough of taking rest. Get ready now. Chaitra, Meena, and Lasya you three go to parlour now." Aunty announced walking in. Lasya is Meena's best friend from college and we both are best friends from school.

We went to the parlor as instructed and it took 3 hours for Meena to get ready. I and Lasya got ready in some 20 minutes. I took the driver's seat as they can't drive in those heavy attires. I being the smart one chose a dress instead of a half-saree or saree.

We reached the venue and went to the room allocated to Meena while Groom performed some rituals on mandap which doesn't require the bride's presence

We reached the venue and went to the room allocated to Meena while Groom performed some rituals on mandap which doesn't require the bride's presence. After that Meena was called and we accompanied her to the mandap. I held one side of terasala( A cloth that is held between groom and bride preventing them from seeing each other till jeelakara-bellam is done). It was tiring to stand there and hold a cloth for a long while Pandit Ji is chanting Mantras non-stop and these stupid photographers are making my job more difficult by trying to capture both bride and groom sitting in front of me moving here and there. After what felt like an eternity they both placed jeelakara-bellam on each others' heads which permitted us to officially remove the cloth which we gladly did and sat behind Meena.  The whole wedding was completed by 12:30. and we went home. Maa sa and Dad along with Attha and Nanamma left at 10 while we youngsters stayed back till completion of everything.

Aakash Annaya drove us home. And the traffic was not much as it was already midnight and tomorrow is a working day. We reached home by 1:10 and my eyes are shutting down without my permission. I went to my room and slept after changing into my nightwear. I didn't check my mobile all day which is a shocking thing for me too.
