A/N: Happy 159th birthday, Sherlock Holmes!

I was much taken by Vincent Starett's poem, so I decided to write this. And it's Sherlock's birthday anyway.

Dedicated to Fox-Trot-9, fellow Sherlockian. *waves*

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"And so, reader, farewell to Sherlock Holmes! I thank you for your past constancy, and can but hope that some return has been made in the shape of that distraction from the worries of life and stimulating change of thought which can only be found in the fairy kingdom of romance.
Arthur Conan Doyle."
So long ago you’ve graced the street
Of fogs and gaslight – dim and wet.
And many times you’ve heard the beat
Of frantic knockings – strangers met.
With intellect, a road you lit
Which was so long bereft of light.
Your proof was reason, sword was wit;
No trifling things escape your sight.
That you have gone, I understand,
Although I’ll see you still, I know:
Where nothing ever stays your hand,
Where steaming hansoms come and go.
On this Valhalla, still you’ll strut
With faithful Watson by your side.
The covers never shall be shut;
You’ll roam your England far and wide.
