Mkalimani was found as a newborn cub next to his mother's corpse in the outlands, a helpless mewling cub. He was adopted by the fierce-maned lioness Zira, and the docile Sarafina. He was raised to be a strong, caring member of the Pride, but after Mufasa's death and Simba's disappearance, Sarafina died soon after, killed by the claws of the rogue lion none other than Nala's father, Jabali. Zira was swept into a fit of grief, rage, and want for vengeance. Scar promised her everything under one condition: her full commitment and loyalty. Zira agreed, much to Mkalimani's dismay. Scar wanted heirs, resulting in Nuka's birth. Scar refused to acknowledge Nuka as his own, saying that his genes were cursed if mixed with Zira's. Zira, devoted to Scar, mated with a rogue and gave birth to Vitani and Kovu. After Simba's return, Mkalimani begged Scar to step down and let Simba take his rightful place as king, but he refused, sending his hyenas after Mkali. Scar was killed and Zira refused to be loyal to Simba, resulting in her exile with her cubs. Mkali is forced into a tough spot, torn between his love for his mom, and his loyalty to his pride.
