Hawaii, the most isolated archipelago on earth, has never been more alone. Residents are unexpectedly cut off from power and the rest of the world without warning, left without imported resources and thousands of stranded tourists. Sheba, a volcanologist on the big island, is flabbergasted. She has no way to reach her family in Colorado or her colleagues in Washington state and Oregon, making her feel more alone than ever. Meanwhile, as Sheba struggles to keep herself and her pets fed, an infeasible and insidious takeover of the main land is underway and is on its way to the big island.
