The dead hand of history still grips the throat of the present. Three centuries after a meteor shower devastated Earth, humanity is divided. The powered are blamed for the virus that killed billions and twisted the natural world into something deadly. Feared and hated, they are sent into the wilds to fight the mutations that now threaten what remains. Ezra has spent his life resisting that division. As a doctor, he believes every life is worth saving. Then he comes home to find a wounded stranger collapsed on his floor. Saving the man is instinct. What follows is not. The choice pulls Ezra into a hidden war where old hatred still shapes the present, and the truth behind the world's ruin may be more dangerous than the monsters outside the city walls.

When I was eleven, my world was divided into two sides of war in a land where contamination could kill a man. Orphaned, I was taken in by the bright side to this battle and trained to become a living weapon and get my revenge on the man who took so much from me. By the age of sixteen, I was no soldier, I was an elite, a smaller group of higher-ups called Phantoms. They handle the harder missions. My only hope was that I got to look into the eyes of those who did me wrong five years previous. My name is Alexis, a secret weapon, and one of the highest Phantoms alive...

My entry for the #PlanetOrPlastic contest for National Geographic. In 500 words or less, we were asked to write and share a story, may it be real or fiction that was inspired by the photos that were presented. For more information, visit the @NationalGeographic profile to find out more about the contest. I suck at writing short stories (they tend to get away from me and turn out much longer than I originally intended, so this was quite the challenge), but I managed, and I really like how it turned out. Word count: 500 words (on the dot, phew!) Completed: 23/11/18 @NationalGeographic

The classroom always smelled the same-dust, dry markers, and something faintly sour I could never name. I sat where I always did, close enough to the middle to seem normal, far enough back to disappear if I needed to. The sunlight on the floor never reached my desk, and I liked it that way. I wasn't special.

We've all heard what people have to say about global contamination: it's not a real problem, production just can't stop, money make the world go round. Alright, fair enough. True, sudden changes would bring sudden consequences not many will be fond of. Consequences.. have you heard of such word? Do you know what it means? By the looks of what we're doing to the planet, I don't think we know it's meaning. Well, let the flowing character enlighten you some. If we're so determined to destroy the now and the future, we could at least hear out what he has to say.
