Prompt- It's your birthday
Gender Neutral
Life in the Survey Corps was usually steady, if you forget about the death-defying missions you did as well as the other bumps on the road that occurred every so often. But overall, it was smooth sailing. Now, however, was not. Seeing as death was a constant occurrence in this particular field, birthdays were a rarity, making the celebration even more of a dealing cause it to be extravagant sometimes. So what? You may ask, well there is one problem.
You've never had a birthday that was celebrated.
You hadn't exactly wanted to celebrate it either, making it awkward if you were to celebrate it. You had celebrated Armins birthday before with other people that he was close to such as Jean, Eren, and even Sasha, though I'm pretty sure 90% of her coming was due to the small cake you all shared.
On Armins birthday, everyone congratulated him throughout the day, settling in the mess hall for a brief party, before going back to Armin's room for a few hours before finally going to bed. Armin had loved spending his birthday with you- though you hadn't particularly enjoyed it. You loved Armin and wanted to give him everything so on that day you pushed down your want to be alone and stayed with him, much to his pleasure.
Armin knew about your 'social-meter' as you both called it. People and public places just weren't your exact scene. He knew that. Armin knew and accepted it, to him it was a part of what made you, you. He didn't see it's as anything negative too. That's why the minute the clock struck midnight, signally the start of your birthday, Armin turned the doorknob and sat beside you on your bed - you still being awake given your sleep schedule.
"Happy birthday, love" He spoke sweetly and quietly, as to not wake your fellow soldiers.
He kissed you on your forehead before pulling you into a hug.
"You don't know how scared I was that I'd never get to celebrate this with you." He spoke.
Every word was true too. He often kept himself awake, stressing and paralyzing himself with fear that though you had celebrated his birthday, he could end up celebrating yours alone in a graveyard. The thought haunted him and played on loop, almost endlessly. Though, when he saw you his mind goes bare and all he can think is,
Wow.
You alone pushed his fear away for a time, never failing to save him from himself.
After releasing you from the hug he held your shoulders, looking at you with determination yet softness layered on top.
"I know you don't think it's a good idea but I want you to have a normal birthday as I did. If it's ever too much we can leave though. I don't want to push you but I think you might end up liking it. What'd ya think?"
His voice was convincing. It stayed low and slow, like honey on a warm summer evening.
"Oh um, okay."
To be honest, you weren't that sure that you could make it. Being an introvert surrounded by people like Connie and Sasha, who were extroverts, could be challenging at times. The look on Armin's face made up for it, his eyes and face glowed as he told you how proud he was of you. Armin, being the supportive type, was always there and constantly praised you for even the littlest of things. After talking for a little while longer, Armin climbed into bed with you, mumbling about how 'captain can go to hell- it's your birthday' and falling asleep, you doing the same only moments later.
Time Skip- Morning
Waking up with your boyfriend kissing your cheek definitely wasn't the worst way to wake up. You giggled slightly before opening your eyes, meeting Armin's mesmerizing ones almost immediately. He smiled and kissed you one more time before getting up.
"Morning beautiful." He complimented before gingerly pulling the covers off you, ensuring that you'd actually get up.
After a slight groan of protest, you sat up, seeing that Armin had set clean clothes out on the dresser and was now standing by the door.
"I'll see you at breakfast in 20, yeah?"
You nodded, still a little out of it due to the amazing sleep you had just come from.
Armin's POV
I left them to get dressed while I hurried to do the same. It would take them at least 15 minutes to down to the mess hall. I had to beat them. After successfully getting to my room, changing, and racing down to the cafeteria I looked at the clock, I've got about 5 minutes.
I located our group, consisting of Eren, Mikasa, Ymir, Connie, Jean, and Sasha. They always made it here before us, and so far everything was going fine.
"Look guys I have something to tell you. It's Y/n's birthday."
A small cloud of 'oohs' and gasps erupted as I continued quickly.
"They agreed to celebrate it normally but still don't make a huge scene and be a little calmer okay? Don't be over-the-top but don't make them suspect that I told you to be calm okay? This is their day."
After I finished talking everyone either nodded or hummed in agreement. Good. I'll do anything to make this day perfect for them.
As I suspected they arrived almost 5 minutes later, exactly when I thought they would. They sat down next to me, Jean on the other side of them. A chorus of 'Happy Birthdays' erupted at their arrival and they smiled thanking everyone before turning to me. I nodded, knowing what they were thinking, before the both of us stood up together and walked towards the line to get our food. A small smile gracing their lips made mine do the same.
Normal POV
You knew something was up. You weren't tackled. You weren't asked a million questions. To be honest, you liked it, but something was most definitely up. You decided to ignore it for now though.
The day continued how it had started. Peaceful, non-chaotic, perfect. The evening had rolled around and it was time for the party. You dressed in casual clothes, a nice change from the gear we wore all the time. Just as the clock struck 8 there was a knock on the door. Punctual as always, Armin entered after hearing your 'come in baby'. Armin loves pet names. He'd constantly blush and or smile when you called him by something other than his name. Even Min-Min made him happy. It's adorable and it's no surprise that when he turned to you, his cheeks held a rosy tint to them.
"You ready?"
"Yeah." You said before turning to face him fully.
He wore a dark blue long sleeve shirt and grey sweatpants, his outfit overall making him look even cuter. He held out his hand, you taking it graciously, before he lead you out of the room and down the hall towards the dining area. It was peaceful as the two of you walked, his rubbing his thumb on the back of your hand gently. In return, you laid your head on his shoulder as you continued to your destination. After your small walk, you arrived in front of two large doors.
"Ready?" he asked, waiting for your nod before he pushed the door open with his free hand.
Chaos. Pure Chaos. We were only an hour in before someone decided to bring out the party games. Uno was first, causing many arguments, screaming matches, and deep betrayals. Ymir and Christa left soon after, Christa crying that Connie didn't like how she placed a card when it messed him up and Ymir following to comfort her.
Next was the piñata. Armin gave you a reassuring smile before covering your eyes with the blindfold and using his hands on your shoulders to guide you. After his touch left, you swung hard. Swing after swing, the bat was left with nothing but air until around your 25th swing when you hit something hard and a loud groan came from your feet.
Moving the blindfold off one eye with one hand you saw Eren, lying on the ground with his stomach held tightly. You took the blindfold off completely before dropping the bat and sitting next to him. After many sorrys and him telling you that everything was okay, he left. Mikasa in tow, glaring daggers as the door shut.
Despite what happened, the mood was still light and energetic. Jean and Connie couldn't stop laughing as Sasha broke the piñata on the ground, eager to see what was inside. Much to her disappointment though, it was empty. Supplies were too limited to have anything good in it anyway, not that you had expected much though. It's was all about the idea of a piñata that made it fun, empty or not. After seeing Sashas expression Armin perked up and suggested cake.
Everyone nodded eagerly. Armin disappeared and returned momentarily with a cake, your favorite flavor and frosting color looked perfect despite how homemade it was, making it even more humbling in your opinion. You sat at the bench. Connie, Jean, and Sasha following, the latter drooling excessively.
Armin lit the candles and sat beside you, starting to guide everyone in the song. You sat there smiling and glancing from the candles to Armin. A smile on your face made him grin even brighter. As soon as you had blown out the candles though the cake was ripped from you by Sasha who then proceeded to fight with it with Connie. They grabbed handfuls and threw them at each other. Jean shouted at them, trying to get them to stop while Armin hugged you so you couldn't see the mess they were making.
But you wanted to see what was happening though, you moved your face in an attempt to see only to be hit on the left side of your head. Cake matted and covered your hair, making it messy and saturated before dropping onto your should, spreading messiness ten-fold.
