it casts a
shadow
on every
sunny day
the way the
moonlight
creates
monsters
out of
nothing
out of
ashes
in a fire
a single
ember
burns
like the eye
of something
otherworldly
and hellish
twisted hands
grope along
pale walls
in candlelight
every
shadow
comes
alive
killer clowns
and men with
masks
creep silently
through the
halls
creaking floorboards
and squeaky doors
make you jump
but there is something
stirring
inside you
that speaks
softly
venomously
like the hissing
of a snake
because perhaps
you wear a
smile
as your mask
and blush
instead of a
red nose
but your hands have
held a knife
have drawn
blood
from smooth skin
and your toes
have lingered
at the edge of a roof
glanced around
once
twice
you didn't jump
but you considered it
for a second
and maybe
that makes you
the most
monstrous
monster
of them
all
