ONE HARMLESS FUN
Victor Glass was never one for attention. He typically reserved the spotlight for his best friend Maeve Bloodwood and that was absolutely fine with him. He preferred to succeed quietly. Yes, his marks in school competed with that of the top students, but he only told people if they asked and it was rare they asked. He coasted quietly through his time at Hogwarts, although he was a bit sad there were less than three years left of his time as a student. Still, he was hoping to get out of Hogwarts relatively unnoticed. He didn't need his names on trophies or anything like that, he just wanted to be remembered by the people who loved him.
What he did not want to be remembered for was falling accidental victim to James Potter and his friend's escapades. However, as a handful of younger students watched the boy drag himself out of the lake while being very nearly chased by the giant squid, he had a feeling word was going to travel fast.
"I am going to kill you, James!" Victor exclaimed angrily as he shivered down to his core. It was fucking November and he had just been forced to take a dip in the lake.
"Oi! I thought you were Snivellus, sorry mate!" James Potter laughed cheerily, raising his wand and casting a drying spell on him. "See! All right again! Not my fault you 'aven't cut your hair! Reckon you look just like him from the back!"
"His hair is like three shades darker than mine!" Victor argued as he wanted to think of something quick to get James back, but he couldn't think of a single thing. "And I don't like Snape either but you ought to not be throwing anyone in that lake, it's bloody freezing!"
A new voice joined them, James Potter's long-time unattainable crush, Lily Evans, came marching over, her silver prefect badge shining in the Autumn sun, "Don't think I didn't see that, Potter. Vic, say the word and I'll assign as many detentions as ya need."
Victor had always been a friend of Lily's, after all, she and Maeve ended up being dormmates their first year and they had been thick as thieves ever since. He had some qualms about her other choice of friends (Re: Severus "Snivellus" Snape) but he didn't mind her when she was on his own. She walked over to Victor and slung her arm around his shoulders which was a little hard considering he had about three inches on her.
"Oh please not detention, I already have 'em 'till the holidays!" James whined while his friends teased him. Of course, Sirius Black couldn't laugh considering the two worked as a team most of the time and Black probably had the same amount of detentions facing him.
"Don't bother with it, Evans," the boy sighed, nodding to Sirius, "Oi, you seen Maeve?"
"Library, she's already behind on Charms," Sirius told him. That was pretty much the extent of his and Sirius's conversations. It was always about Maeve because they really had nothing else to talk about. It wasn't that Victor didn't like James and his little crew, he just never found them particularly entertaining. He did like Remus, he supposed. He was always kind to him and helped him with certain things in classes when he needed it. What they had was more of a mutual understanding of each other more than friendship.
Victor made a point to stay away from Sirius, though. It wasn't that he thought the boy was trouble because of his family or anything like that. No, no, that boy was more trouble under the Potter's roof than he ever was before he was infamously disinherited from the Black family. He stayed away from Sirius because if he thought about him for too long he was going to have to seriously acknowledge something about himself -- something to do with the fact that he never found it necessary to have a girlfriend. He didn't like thinking about such things, so he chose not to. If he let his eyes linger on Sirius's sharp jawline or long black hair, that meant he had to think about it and he did not want to think about it. It also didn't help that Sirius and Maeve had been in a relationship for over a year. He was Maeve's, Victor knew this.
"Thanks, Sirius," Victor nodded as he looked over at Lily, "I'm gonna go find her, deal with this git for me will ya?"
"Absolutely," Lily smiled as she let him go and Victor began to head off towards the school now that his study session by the lake had been spoiled. Behind him, he heard Lily telling James off about throwing hexes around at their fellow students and he laughed to himself. Victor was going to play nice for now, making James think he was unbothered by him telling Lily not to punish him. In reality, Victor wanted revenge. Sure, it was petty, but that was Victor's favorite thing to be.
The warmth of Hogwarts was welcome to him as he passed a few students leaving the afternoon classes. Heading to the library, he found Maeve with her face pressed against her charms book. He laughed quietly to himself before putting his hand up next to her ear and snapping. She shot up, grappling for her wand, but she stopped once she realized it was him.
"Don't scare me like that, you git!" the girl said with a laugh, "God, I love Sirius, but he's got to know he can't leave me to study on my own. I always fall asleep! I think I'm cursed."
"Cursed with hating charms, maybe," Victor teased, chuckling softly. He recounted the events of the last ten minutes while the girl snorted so loudly the librarian shushed them to which Victor glared at her. "It's not funny!"
She shrugged, clearly trying and failing to stifle her laugher. "It's a little funny."
"I'm going to kill him," Victor shook his head as he leaned back and crossed his arms. He propped his feet on the table, but as soon as the librarian caught his eye he put them down.
"You're not going to kill him," Maeve argued with a small laugh, pushing a loose lock of dark brunette hair behind his ear. He could see why Sirius liked Maeve, she was obviously one of the most beautiful girls in their year. Of course, there were other girls Victor obviously could have feigned interest in. There was Jasmine, but she and Frank Sakai were deadset on each other and have been since last year -- not doubt they would start dating soon. Marlene Mckinnon was a looker, but she was far too much like Maeve in her recklessness. He supposed Alice Fortescue was pretty -- in a rugged, uncaring way. She was about to leave Hogwarts though and no doubt Frank Longbottom would be putting a ring on it as soon as they left Hogwarts. Maybe he had to look outside of Gryffindor, that could likely be his problem. Still, he didn't fancy wasting his time with girls. He knew there was no point, but he didn't want to give up on them completely because once he did, he had a feeling there was no going back.
"That's your thinking face, what are you thinking about?" Maeve broke him out of his deep thought as she snapped her fingers in front of his face. "Please don't tell me you actually want to get revenge on James. It was just harmless fun."
Victor scoffed, "Right, so what's wrong if I have a little harmless fun in return?"
"Fine, but if we're going to plan revenge we need to do this right," Maeve sighed as she closed her book, "We need this to be perfect. I love James, but it's about time he got what's comin' to him."
"What do you suggest?"
"Oh, I have absolutely no idea," the brunette laughed, "but I know someone who might."
