Word Count: 1900
"You just had to run your mouth, didn't you?" you asked with a sigh, unable to to truly stay man at the Irishman that you were helping walk down the street.
"Hey! He deserved it!" Sean insisted, still able to loudly defend himself even when he was clutching the bleeding wound on his side.
"Will you keep your voice down, you're just drawing more attention" you warned him when you saw a few passerby's give him suspicious glances.
"Right because you carrying a bleeding man down the street doesn't draw any attention at all" Sean nodded sarcastically, squeezing your hand that he was holding onto when a stinging sensation pulsed through his side.
"Shut up" you mumbled, squeezing his hand in return in an attempt to comfort him.
Sean did as you said and was silent as you guided him over to the small inn in town. You took him inside and walked up to the bar to rent a room, the bartender looked unsure and you had to pay a little extra for him to allow your bleeding friend inside but you managed to get the room.
You helped Sean up the stairs and into the room that you rented, sitting him down on the bed with a small huff. You gathered everything you would need to tend to his wound before moving back to stand in front of him.
"Alright, let's get a proper look at this thing" you sighed as you helped him removed his jacket, placing it on the chest at the bottom of the bed.
"Hey you could at least buy me a drink first" Sean joked as you started to unbutton his shirt.
"Sean, I swear, I will let you bleed out" you warned him, shooting him an unconvincing glare as you finished unbuttoning the bloody short.
"No you wouldn't, you love me!" Sean exclaimed.
"You wish" you muttered, hoping that he didn't see your blush as you removed his shirt and placed it on top of his jacket.
Using a damp cloth, you cleaned the blood away from the wound and sighed when you got a better look at it. It definitely hadn't hit anything vital, it wasn't too deep but it would scar. Sean was silent for once, his hands holding the edge of the mattress so tight that his knuckles were turning white, as you stitched up the wound.
"Is it going to scar?" Sean asked as you ran a new clean damp cloth over the treated wound, cleaning away any excess blood.
"Yeah, I think so" you told him as you stepped away, dropping the cloth onto the bedside table.
"Is it going to look bad?" Sean asked, the confident and joking tone he had was nowhere to be seen. He was quiet, maybe even nervous and insecure.
"Of course not, don't be silly" you assured him as you picked up some bandages you were glad that you always kept in your saddlebags. "Now you're a real outlaw. Got a scar and everything to prove it" you teased as you wrapped the bandage around his waist, him lifting his arms slightly to help you.
"Hey! I am a real outlaw!" Sean's boisterous personality began to come back as he defended himself.
"I know, I know. I'm teasing" you assured him, finishing with the bandages. You stepped away from him again and started to tidy everything up, packing everything back into your satchel and throwing anything useless into the trash. "Seriously though, don't worry about some scarring. We all have a scar or two. Anyway, some women like them" you flashed him a smile, trying to cheer him up.
"Yeah?" Sean grinned, making you chuckle.
"Yeah. Makes you seem tough and dangerous" you told him.
"Do you, uh, like men who have scars?" Sean asked as he lent over to remove his shoes, hissing in pain before giving up and straightening his back again.
"Me? Sure" you shrugged as you walked back over to him. "I mean, it ain't a deal breaker. They're just a part of you and adds character. Not something you should worry about" you spoke as you knelt down in front of him, taking his shoes off for him.
"Maybe getting stabbed wasn't such a bad thing then" Sean joked, smiling again.
"Just don't go getting stabbed again. I don't want to keep nursing you back to health" you chastised as you pushed his shoes under the bed and stood up again.
"But I have such a good nurse!" Sean complimented.
"Shut up" you laughed, shaking your head at him. "Alright. You should get some rest before we head back to the camp. You'll have to be careful, you don't want to break the stitches but we can always fix it when we get back. Then, you won't be able to run jobs for a while" you told him, knowing that he won't like having to stay still for so long.
"So I'm bed bound?" Sean asked as you helped him move up the bed so that he was sitting with his back against the headboard.
"Yeah, until I say so" you nodded.
"You got it, doc" Sean grinned. "You'll keep me company though, right?" he asked, giving you the best puppy dog eyes he could muster.
"Of course. Nobody else is going to put up with you" you joked but the truth was that you never planned on leaving him, you would get him back on his feet in no time.
"You're, uh, gonna stay right?" Sean asked, suddenly worried that you were going to leave and rent another room for yourself.
"'course I am. Need to keep an eye on you" you assured him. "You've already gotten into a bar fight, who knows what else you'd get up to" you teased.
"It wasn't my fault" Sean pouted.
"Sure it wasn't" you rolled your eyes. "But it ain't like you...are you going to tell me what happened?" you asked. You knew Sean's mouth could get him into trouble and that he has a tendency to overestimate his own abilities but it really wasn't like him to start a fight for no reason, especially when he was with you.
"He was bein' a bastard, sayin' stupid shit. That's all" Sean told you, adverting his gaze.
"Sean? What's going on?" you asked, your voice softer now as your concern grew.
"Nothin', he didn't know what he was talking about" Sean shrugged.
"Alright, so whatever he said really bothered you, eh?" you frowned as you walked around the bed, climbing on and sitting beside him, leaning back against the headboard. "C'mon, you can tell me, you know that" you reminded him.
"He was just talking about you, y'know how drunks can get. Told him to shut his mouth" Sean told you, seemingly somewhat embarrassed about something.
"You know that you don't have to defend my honour, right? I'm capable of doing that myself" you joked, gently nudging his arm with your own.
"Yeah, I know. And you proved that to both of us when you came to my rescue" Sean grinned proudly. "He didn't believe that you were there with me but he did when you came running over, all protective and worried" he chuckled but looked away from you again.
"Is...that what bothered you so much?" you asked curiously.
"Well no. What bothered was the way he was talkin' about ya" Sean confessed but clearly wasn't telling you something.
"Well, no need to worry about that now. We handled it and you're alright, that's all that matters" you smiled, hoping to put him at ease. "Plus, you got to prove him wrong about me being there with you. Ain't nobody else I'd rather be with" you assured him as you placed your hand on his.
"Ya mean it?" Sean asked, looking at you again with expressive eyes.
"Of course I do. The camp would be miserable without you, you make everything fun. But I do wish you would be more careful, don't need ya getting shot or something next time" you told him and meant it.
"You're worried about me" he teased with a cheeky grin.
"Of course I'm worried about you! You got stabbed. You could've been seriously hurt" you sighed and rested your head against his shoulder, your hand still laying on top of his.
"But I wasn't, because you were there" Sean reminded you as he rested his head on top of yours, just enjoying the closeness.
"Yeah well, next time I might just leave ya to clean up your own mess" you threatened but you both knew you were lying.
"No you won't. Ya love me, wouldn't let anything happen to me" Sean protested and, this time, you didn't deny anything he said. You just let the words sit between you both. "At least I hope ya do" he confessed, voice quieter and softer now, more vulnerable.
"I do. Y'know I do" you pressed a light kiss to his shoulder.
The two of you were close, you always had been. This wasn't the first time that the two of you found yourself enjoying each other's closeness like this, it just wasn't uncomfortable for either of you, but there was something different between you both this time.
"Yeah I know ya love me but I mean-" Sean started to clarify but you cut him off.
"I know what you mean Sean. I love you" you insisted as you lifted your head from his shoulder, looking up at him to meet his gaze.
"Y'know I ain't dying, right? You don't have to take pity on me and grant me my dying wish" Sean joked and you weren't sure whether he was just messing around or if he was trying to protect himself from getting his hopes up.
"I'd hit you if it wouldn't make me feel so bad" you huffed and he laughed.
"I love ya too, darlin'" Sean wrapped his arm around your shoulder, wincing a little as the movement tugged on his wound.
"Careful" you warned gently.
"I'm alright, don't worry" Sean assured you.
"It's getting late, you should sleep" you told him.
"Will you stay?" Sean asked again. It wouldn't be the first time the two of you had shared a bed but this was different.
"'course I will" you promised him.
Sean winced as he pulled away from you and made himself comfortable under the sheets while you stood from the bed and removed your boots and jacket.
"Hold on" Sean pushed himself up onto his elbows as you joined him under the sheets.
"What?" you asked, watching him expectantly.
"Don't I get a goodnight kiss?" he asked with a small but playful pout.
"You're an idiot" you shook your head at him but with a fondness.
Still, you lent over and pressed a light kiss to his lips, a kiss that he instantly returned. You pulled away from the kiss and he followed you, chasing your lips.
"Nope, you need to rest" you laughed as you placed a hand on his shoulder, making him lay flat on his back.
"But-" Sean began to protest.
"Think of it as something to aim for, a reason to heal fast" you teased.
"Fine, fine. You win" Sean laughed and nodded as you lay down properly as well. "G'night, darlin'" he murmured as he looked over at you, smiling as you made yourself comfortable.
"Goodnight, Sean" you smiled back, shuffling a little closer to him and resting your forehead against his shoulder as you both fell asleep.
The two of you wanted to embrace each other, hold each other, but you didn't want to accidentally bother Sean's wound. So you would settle for this closeness for now.
