Part 3: Dangerous Secrets
When Elena reached Wickery Bridge, she saw a dark figure leaning over the bridge looking at the water. Klaus.
She parked at the end of the bridge, pulled out her keys with a shaky hand and opened the door. She wasn't exactly sure what Klaus would say but she was scared. She took in a uneven breath and watched as she could see the outline of her breath in the air. She pulled her jacket tighter and started walking towards Klaus, looking directly at him, feeling a sudden boost of confidence.
Klaus continued to watch the water, even as he heard Elena stop right next to him. He planned to tell her what happened and about how he was feeling. He waited on the bridge for thirty minutes before she showed, and in that time he changed his mind. When he thought he fancied Caroline it made him weak...she was his weakness. What happens if he falls in love with Elena? Love would make him weak and he couldn't have that.
"Klaus," Elena deadpanned, crossing her arms to keep warm.
"I'm surprised you showed up, luv," Klaus smiled, turning away from the water to face Elena. When he saw her he wanted so badly to tell her the truth, but he couldn't. He turned back to face the water, staring deeply into it.
"I want to know what happened last night," Elena replied, standing anxiously on the balls of her feet.
"Ah, quite the light-weight," Klaus chuckled. Elena rolled her eyes at his comment and went to stand next to him.
"So, what happened?" She asked, "I remember, the ball and everything up to when I got out the alcohol and the rest is a bit hazy. Did I do anything that bad?"
"Ah, it wasn't exactly what you did," he corrected, "though you did some interesting things," Klaus commented, smirking at the memory.
"Okay... What did I say?" Elena asked, looking at him with innocent doe eyes.
"See, Elena I was going to tell you about last night but, I can't," he admitted, and Elena realized what he was about to do. He grabbed the sides of her face gently and looked into her eyes. "Last night, you went home after the ball, I never went to your house. You were alone the whole time, drinking until you fell asleep. When you get to your house you will remember going to the bridge to clear your mind, and you won't remember this conversation."
Elena repeated his words mechanically and walked back to her car, not remembering anything.
When Elena got back home she wasn't really shocked to see Damon and Stefan in her kitchen.
"Who was here last night?" Stefan asked, looking at the two glasses on the table.
"No one," Elena answered easily, leaning against the counter. Stefan didn't seem to believe her but figured they had bigger things to worry about.
"We need a plan to kill Esther before she finds out that you've double crossed her." Damon said, turning towards her, while he leaned against the entry way.
"Okay..." Elena sighed, "How do you suppose we do that?"
"She's powerful, but Bonnie's magic can probably match Esther's." Stefan answered, not looking at Elena.
"She was dead in a box for a thousand years, what makes you think she'll stay dead now?" Elena asked, pulling off her jacket and setting down her keys.
"I'll call Bonnie and tell her to come her so we can make a plan." Stefan said, walking out of the room, with his phone in hand.
"What were you thinking?" Damon asked, walking towards her. Elena didn't answer.
"Tell me! How could you risk your own life to save them!" Damon shouted, looking at Elena's eyes, for any answer.
"I'm not going to apologize." Elena said flatly, "Elijah helped me when Klaus tried to sacrifice me, Kol hasn't done anything to us, Rebekah may be a bitch but she doesn't deserve it, and Klaus... if we killed him we'd be just as bad as he is."
"Now is not the time to get a conscience," Damon ground out, looking at her with nothing but pure anger in his icy blue eyes.
"I've always had a conscience, but now I'm finally listening to it!" Elena shouted, stepping past Damon and going to the living room by Stefan, just as he put his phone down.
"She's on her way," Stefan told Elena, not looking at her.
"Good," Elena smiled, then turned to Stefan with a serious face, "thank you for understanding, Stefan."
He nodded emotionlessly, walking into the kitchen. She sighed, laying on the couch.
She got a weird kind of chill when she sat. It was like déjà vu, but she couldn't remember. She saw her heels from the night before, next to the couch, but she didn't remember leaving them there. She squinted her eyes in confusion, trying hard to remember.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Stefan answered it.
"Stefan, what did you need to talk about?" Bonnie asked, rushing into the house. Damon came into the living room and sat far away from Elena, as she rolled her eyes. Stefan stood by the door and Bonnie sat next to Elena.
"Esther was planning to link her children together and kill them, but...someone stopped it." Stefan started to explain, not mentioning Elena's name. "Now Esther might come after us for revenge."
"Why would she come after us?" Bonnie asked, looking at Elena, confused.
"I stopped the spell, but I already got yelled at and I've heard it. You all think I made a mistake, and I probably did. But now we just need to focus on fixing this."
Bonnie glared at Elena, before nodding in agreement. "Esther is channeling my power and I don't think I can cut her off."
"Then how do we stop her?" Elena asked, with a hopeless expression. Bonnie didn't answer, just continued to stare at the floor with an unreadable face.
"You have to stop my mother from channeling your little witch friend." Said a British voice from the door. They all snapped their heads in that direction and widened their eyes as they saw Klaus. A small smile appeared on Elena's lips when she seen him, but for a reason unknown to her. Elena's and Klaus' eyes locked for a second, before Klaus looked at Bonnie.
Klaus walked forward as Bonnie and Damon eyed him in disgust. Stefan, however, was watching the way Elena's face lit up when she seen Klaus. He seen the way that they shared glances and secret smiles.
"What do you mean?" Elena asked, narrowing her eyes. Bonnie stood up backing away in fear.
"He wants to kill me," Bonnie exclaimed, starting to chant in Latin as Klaus fell to his knees in pain.
Klaus growled, flashing his fangs, "I'm doing what needs to be done!"
Klaus rushed towards Bonnie and Elena jumped up standing in front of him.
"Klaus stop," Elena said calmly, looking into his eyes. Stefan and Damon were at the edge of their seats ready to attack if Klaus tried anything. Klaus was still leaned forward in an attacking position, and he was conflicted, he could hurt Elena and save himself or he could back away and show weakness. He growled deep in his throat as he backed away, deciding he couldn't hurt her.
"Now we need another way to stop Esther," Elena stated, looking around the group. No one answered. Elena sat down in frustration burying her head in her hands, "this is pointless."
"Elena, I'm sorry but I have to go. I'll look through some spell books, though." Bonnie commented, walking towards the door.
"Thank you Bonnie," Elena smiled at her friend. Bonnie nodded understandingly, before walking out the door. When the door shut Klaus took a seat next to Elena.
"So how are we going to kill mama original?" Damon asked, anger still laced in his voice, about the situation. Elena rolled her eyes at him before turning to Klaus.
"If Esther is channeling Bonnie's power, isn't there any other way to stop her?" Elena asked Klaus.
"Sorry, luv," Klaus frowned, standing up and leaning over her. He looked into her eyes frowning, "sit still, don't talk until I leave, and you won't remember this conversation. We found a way to stop Esther and everything is working as planned."
"We're going to stop Esther, everything is working as planned." Elena repeated mechanically.
"What's your plan, Klaus?" Stefan grounded out, glaring at Klaus angrily.
"You two will kill Bonnie or her mother or I will take Elena on a hybrid making road trip." Klaus threatened, leaving the house with a satisfied smirk.
A/N: Do you like it? I don't want to rush Klaus and Elena into a relationship, but they will hopefully get together soon. (:
