Description: Phil and Alice are asked to show around two new transfer students.\
. . . .
̈Ah, Phil, there you are!" Phil's French teacher, Mrs. Walsh called.
Phil stopped and turned around, slightly disappointed. He had been on his way to lunch and was worried she would ask him to help tutor a freshman again. "Yes, Ma'am?"
"Do you know where Alice is? I need to talk to both of you," she asked.
"Um, yeah, she's at lunch. I'm going to see her now," Phil responded.
"Perfect!"
Phil led her to his and Alice's normal lunch table.
"Hey, Mrs. Walsh. Hey, Phil. What's up?" Alice asked when they arrived.
"Since you two are my best students, I was wondering if you could give tours and generally help two new students? They're from France and I've been told that their English is shaky so they might need help," Mrs. Walsh explained. "There is a girl in your grade, Alice, and a boy in yours, Phil. We made sure that they share most if not all of your classes so it wouldn't affect you too much."
"How shaky is their English?" Alice asked.
"Well, the girl knows more than the boy but they both know quite a bit."
"Okay, I'm in," Alice said.
"Me too," Phil agreed.
. . . .
Phil knocked at Alice's door on Monday morning. The two agreed to head to school earlier than normal to meet the two new students.
Alice yawned as she stepped out of the house. "It's too early," she muttered sadly.
"Agreed but I'm sure the new kids will appreciate it," Phil said.
Alice nodded and the two began their walk to school.
The walk was very peaceful and soon enough they reached the school. The two climbed the front steps and walked to Mrs. Walsh's room.
"Alice, Phil! There you are," Mrs. Walsh greeted. "This is Dan and Em. Dan et Em c'est Phil et Alice. Ils sont vos guides." (Translation: Dan and Em this is Phil and Alice. They are your tour guides) Mrs. Walsh was sitting at her desk and the two new students stood awkwardly next to her.
The girl, Em, was quite a bit shorter than Phil but was still taller than Alice. She had long blonde hair with blue streaks, sea-green eyes, and very pale skin. She was dressed in a Fall Out Boy t-shirt, jeans, leather jacket, and converse. She had a messenger bag slung across one shoulder and offered a lopsided smile to the two.
The boy, Dan, had short curly brown hair, brown eyes, and freckles. He was dressed in a Muse t-shirt, ripped jeans, and converse as well. He was only slightly shorter than Phil and had a galaxy backpack on his back. The smile he offered was smaller but it revealed dimples on each of his cheeks.
"Hello, I did not realize that my guide is," Em paused as if she was thinking, "Un petit chaton." (Translation: a little kitten) Em smiled at Alice, making her heart flutter.
Dan punched Em on the shoulder. "Pourquoi es-tu comme ça?" he said as he rolled his eyes. (Translation: Why are you like this?) He then turned to Phil and Alice, "Nice to meet you."
Both Em and Dan had very thick accents so their English was a little difficult to understand and, while Phil and Alice could understand their French now, they knew that it would be very difficult if they started talking any faster.
Phil and Alice took Dan and Em around the school and showed them all of the different classrooms while pointing out the ones they would need.
"Honestly," Phil told them as they walked to their lockers. "You don't need to worry about all of that too much. Your schedule was modeled after ours so we can help you."
Dan nodded, "Thank you. That is very helpful."
"Anyway," Alice said. "Em and I need to head off to English. We'll see you later." The two grabbed their stuff from their lockers before walking to class.
"We have Math first, correct?" Dan asked.
"We sure do."
The two made their way to class but, as they were early, they were the first ones. Phil sat in his normal seat while Dan stood, slightly awkwardly, near the door.
"Oh, right. We don't have assigned seats in this class. This seat is normally empty," Phil said, gesturing to the seat next to him.
Dan smiled politely and set his books on the desk. "Merci," Dan said with a small nod. "How long have you studied French?"
Phil tilted his head to the side as he counted the years, "Hm, two? Maybe three years. In school, at least. I've been casually learning little pieces by myself. What about you?"
Dan nodded. "I have been learning English for two years. My sister has been learning for four."
"Four?" Phil asked.
Dan made a face, "Her ex-boyfriend was American and a jerk."
"Oh, well, she seems nice."
"Yes. So does your Alice. Em seems to have a lightning bolt for her," Dan said with a smile.
"Em seems to have a what?" Phil asked.
"It's a French saying. You know, like the mustard is getting to my nose or I bought it for a mouthful of bread," Dan explained.
"What does it mean?" Phil asked.
"Oh, it means like love at first sight. You know, to be struck by them."
"That's really sweet. I think Alice really likes her too. Especially after the whole petit chaton thing," Phil said.
Dan laughed. "Em does not try to be slick, she stumbles upon it."
Phi shook his head with a small laugh.
The two managed to get along easily despite Dan's clunky and sometimes hard to understand English. Phil was able to help sometimes but he'd only been taking French for three years so he normally had a French-to-English dictionary on him. The two bonded over anime, music, and bullying Em and Alice about their crushes on one another.
Besides mixing up words, Em and Dan's French only got confusing when they got upset or weren't paying attention. Em got upset and stressed once and her words were mostly very fast French with a bit of garbled English as she attempted to explain which Phil doubted she could even understand. He had only seen Dan get upset once and, while it wasn't as bad as Em, it still didn't make any sense.
"Phil," Dan said one afternoon. "Would you be upset if I, um, confessed something to you?"
Phil smiled, "Of course not."
"Good because you know how I said Em had a lightning bolt for Alice? Well, she's not the only one."
"Wait," Phil said, his heart dropping. "You like Alice? You know she's a lesbian, right?"
"No! No, that's not- Urg. That's not what I mean. I mean I have a lightning bolt for someone else," Dan explained.
"Who?" Phil asked.
"You."
"ME?"
"Why not you?" Dan asked.
"I-I don't know. I guess, I have a lightning bolt for you, too," Phil said, blushing deeply.
"Phil... Would you like to go out some time?" Dan asked.
"I'd love to," Phil responded.
