Chapter twenty-four: This summer (Jacob's POV)

After dinner, we all cleaned up before I went into Madison's room and grabbed a collar and leash for Charlie. The door was open when Charlie came stumbling up the stairs while I was leaving the room. I called him over before clasping his collar on and hanging the leash on. I picked him up, kissing him before taking him downstairs with me.

I set him down and he ran around the house while Madison threw her flip flops on.

"What time are you guys coming back?" Nick asked from his spot on the couch.

"Half an hour or so, forty-five minutes," Mads shrugged. She grabbed the leash when Charlie stopped by her feet and picked him up. "Bye!" she called out.

"Have fun," Nick said.

I nodded before waving him a short bye before closing the door and walking with her. "Where are we going?" I asked while taking her free hand in mine.

"To the park," she answered.

"You wanna walk all the way there?" I asked in confusion. It's not that close when you're walking it.

"I walked there that one night you came looking for me," she shrugged with a smirk.

"I was ordered to do that by your brother," I lied.

"Bullshit," she laughed, "Riley told me how Nick said he would come with you but you wanted to go alone so she took the hint and said I probably wouldn't wanna see too many people," she gave me a pointed look.

"She told you?" I asked, surprised.

"Of course, she did," she shrugged.

We were almost at the park when we saw Noah and Julia walking our way. Madison stopped abruptly. "Let's turn back around," she said but Charlie was tugging the leash the other way.

"Come on, he wants to go to the park," I grabbed her shoulders and turned her back around, walking with my hand locked in hers.

"I'm holding my breath," she mumbled.

"You're not holding your breath," I chuckled.

"I'm holding my breath," she repeated.

"Mads-" she didn't let me finish.

"I'm holding my freaking breath, Jacob," she glared.

I sighed in defeat when Charlie barking broke our silence. We looked ahead to see Noah and Julia staring at us.

"Hey, you guys," Madison tried to be friendly but they weren't responding. "Or not," she mumbled under her breath.

"Y-you got a puppy?" Julia scoffed.

"Oh uh- yeah. Someone dropped him off during my hours so I just brought him home," she shrugged. Julia stepped forward, probably to pet Charlie but he barked before running closer to Mads and me. Madison chuckled while picking him up, "He's not that friendly yet, neither are you," she whispered the last bit, making me laugh.

"We uh- we should go," I said before leading us out of there. Once we were far away, she set him down and we continued with our walk.

She sighed in relief while whining, linking her arm with mine and resting her head on my shoulder. "I hated that," she groaned.

"We did good," I kissed the top of her head as we entered the park.

"Are we allowed to be in here?" I asked while looking around since the entire park was empty.

"Yeah, it's not closed y- nevermind," she shook her head. We sneaked in, walked around for like ten minutes, took care of Charlie before heading back home. We got inside to see all the lights except for the kitchen light off and no one downstairs so they were obviously up in Nick's room.

"Do you think Julia's gonna come down to clear her stuff?" she asked while taking the leash off of Charlie.

"I think she'll send Noah to do it. Her ego is too big," I huffed while getting us a glass of water each.

"What are we gonna do with the room?" she sat up on the counter.

"I don't know, we'll see," I shrugged while standing between her legs. She put her glass down while I put mine beside hers. "Are we gonna go anywhere this summer?" I asked while resting my hands beside her, on the counter.

"We could but what about Charlie?" she asked.

"My grandma can watch him, she loves dogs too," I shrugged.

"Cool, we can plan a place and date and then we can go," she shrugged.

"Just you and me?" I smirked while leaning.

"Mm-hmm," she nodded while leaning in too. "And good old Nick," she whispered.

I groaned under my breath while she laughed.

"He'll have Riley to keep him company, it'll be a group trip," she shrugged.

"Why can't you and I just go?" I arched an eyebrow at her.

"Cause frankly, not taking Nick would be rude considering he'd be the one paying since he's the one with my dad's credit card and he wouldn't go if it was just you and me," she explained.

"Someone else can pay," I stated.

"Someone else can but why would they? Technically my dad is paying and we can all pay him back," she shrugged.

"I don't like you guys paying for all my things, it feels disrespectful," I mumbled.

"Well, you can pay up anytime you want," she shrugged.

"I owe you and Nick money for buying a few things for me, including food anyway," I sighed while agreeing to pay up.

"You can't pay me," she laughed.

"Why not?" I asked in confusion.

"Well, because I owe you money too. You've bought me food plenty of times and you give me a lot of kisses, we'll call it even," she shrugged while rocking her legs back and forth.

"I'm still paying your brother and dad back, I don't like having to owe people," I huffed while putting the empty glasses in the sink.

"Well, you owe me a lot for going out with you," she rested her arms around my neck.

"And why is that?" I chuckled.

"Hello? I made the first move. Me!" she stated.

"I confessed first," I countered.

"I kissed you first," she chuckled.

"Hmm, fair enough," I shrugged before kissing her.

"Get a room," Nick groaned while coming downstairs. We broke away immediately and Mads looked the other way to avoid Nick while tracing her lips with her thumb.

"Hey," I cleared my throat.

"I came to get water, relax." He got his water and went back upstairs.

Mads began laughing before resting her head on my shoulder. "Jesus," she shook her head before pushing me back and hopping off. "I'm tired, let's go," she picked up Charlie before taking my hand and pulling me upstairs. I turned the kitchen light off on the way upstairs, stumbling behind her. We walked into her room and she set Charlie down before going into the bathroom.

She didn't close the door so I went and stood by the entrance. "What're you doing?" I asked while watching her brush her hair.

"Braiding my hair," she replied while she began braiding it.

"You look pretty when you braid your hair," I stood beside her.

"Is that so?" she asked while looking at herself in the mirror as she braided it.

"Mm-hmm," I nodded.

Once she was done, she grabbed her wrist for a hair tie but it wasn't there. She groaned before beginning to look around. I found two on her dresser so I gave her one and slipped the other one on my wrist. "Why are you wearing a hair tie?" she laughed while tying her braid off.

"Because it's yours," I shrugged. She just looked at me in confusion. "And so am I," I flirted.

She laughed before brushing her teeth while I went into my bathroom to do the same and take my shirt off. I came back to her lying in bed with Charlie sleeping on her stomach. She raised her eyebrows at me while I went and lay beside her. "Not sleepy yet, huh?" she asked while running her fingers through my hair.

"No, not yet," I sighed while petting Charlie. Charlie shuffled away before standing at the edge of the bed so she put him down and he went and slept on his bed.

"I guess no whining tonight," she sighed while lying on her side to face me while I did the same. We were lying there when her phone dinged. She sat up and read the text.

"What?" I asked when she started seeming nervous and hesitant.

"Julia's clearing her stuff out tomorrow," she informed me.

"Noah's coming to clean it out?" I questioned.

"Yeah, Noah's coming. He's coming with Julia," she huffed while putting her phone back on the nightstand.

"She's coming here?" I asked in confusion. She wouldn't be coming if it was really for her stuff. God, she's gonna pull something else.

"We can go somewhere tomorrow if you want?" I offered.

"Why would I leave my house for her. No, I'm not going anywhere," she huffed. "She can come and get her stuff anytime she wants," she shrugged.

I was looking at her because I could see through her confidence when my phone rang. I picked up and it was my dad.

This can't be good.
