Nightmare will be in his passive form for this oneshot.
Thank you and enjoy.

It was nighttime when you left the house. Backpack on your back and a pencil in your hand. You were on a mission.

Closing the door behind you as silently as you could, you headed for the forest.
The forest you were headed to was no ordinary forest, no, it was said a couple of magical beings lived there, guarding some kind of treasure.

You were a very curious person so when you had a chance to go check it out yourself, naturally you took it.
Your parents had left on a business trip for a week and they had left your uncle in charge of you. Good thing he was an extremely heavy sleeper.

Your mission:
1. Find out why everyone was too scared to go near that forest.
2. Hopefully, find out what the magical being are and
3. Find out what they guard.

Side missions included:
Drawing a good picture of the night sky in your sketch pad.
Collect some fireflies in your wish jar.
Make friends with the magical entities.

That last one was gonna be tough, but you wanted to do it none the less. With one final check though your mental list, you were off.

On your way there you looked up at the night sky. You always did admire the vast looking expanse that was space. The only reason you never really studied anything like astronomy was because you liked the mystery it had. You liked being able to look at all the stars and just wonder.

Blinking a few times you refocused on the path ahead of you. Not far from the forest now. You slowed down and took a look around. Next to the forest was an open field like area. The grass was kept kind of lengthy and it shimmered in the moonlight as the wind blew through it.

About to resume you mission into the forest, a small light cought your attention from the corner of your eye.
A firefly.

As if taking that single firefly as a signal, several more flickering lights rise up from the grass. Quickly taking off your backpack you set it on the ground, open it up, and quickly take out your jar. The Wishing Jar.
Might as well complete this side mission.

You make sure that your bag is going to be ok where you left it and pocket the pencil you still had in your grasp. You were ready to catch some fireflies.
Keeping your steps light and quick you start your hunting.

You selected a firefly and you followed after it. Once you saw it land you took this chance and cupped it in your hands. Bringing your hands up to your face you took a peek to see that you really did catch it. Happily, you walked over to where you left the open jar and put the glowing bug inside, setting the lid on top before going back out and repeating the same process a few more times.

One side mission complete.

Carefully setting the jar back into your bag, you continued on your journey.
Your attention, again and again was grabbed at any interesting sight or sound. You wonder why you didn't do this more often. Your thoughts suddenly went silent though as soon as you set foot in the forest.

Gone were the occasional hoots of owls and the moonlight was slightly blotted out by the thick branches overhead. The atmosphere was chilling and you actually felt slightly scared.

You pushed on though, you had a mission and you were going to complete it. Walking on, you kept your eyes and ears open for anything dangerous, the air around you only getting colder.

Snap

You froze and looked around, the snap followed by the sound of rustling leaves. Before you could investigate or run away in fear, it stopped. Silence consumed the area around you and you took this time to breathe.

Suddenly, a small light drifted in front of you. A firefly. But something was different about this one.
It was glowing blue.

Your eyes widened and you slowly approached it. It seemed to glow brighter and the area in front of you exploded with what seemed like hundreds of them.

With your mouth opened in awe, you watched as countless number of lightning bugs flew around and formed a shaky but still clear kind of path. Intrigued by this, you decided to follow them.

As you followed their makeshift glowing path, the bugs that you past swarmed behind you and followed you. Soon, the farther you got, their color started to shift to a beautiful shade of purple. You were completely amazed.

The trees around you started thinning out and you ran into some sort of clearing. Here, the fireflies were plentiful and the ones that were behind you flew in front of you and continued to lead you to a single tree near the middle of the clearing.

It was split perfectly in half, one side full of golden apples while the other was filled with black ones. It was stunning.

The tree held a very powerful aura and you were almost to overwhelmed to continue forward. Almost.
You steadily walked up to the tree and your firefly friends seemed to swarm around something. Or rather someone.

You gasped lightly at what you saw.

A skeleton.

He was reading a book, several normal colored fireflies hovering over his shoulders.
He was dressed in a purple jacket, gold trimmings on the collar and the end of the sleeves. A golden belt with the letters NM etched into them. His pants were black and the ends were tucked into boots that were also purple and had gold trimmings and buckles. Finally, a golden crown with moon on it rested on his skull.

Next to him, another skeleton was sleeping. He looked just like the other but his clothes were colored blue and gold. His golden belt had the letters DS on them and his crown kind of did a swirl instead.

"H-Hello?" You hesitantly said. Time to see if the skeleton was nice.
It quickly looked up at you and it looked scared for a bit before it closed its book and set it aside. The fireflies around it moved and gave it room to stand up.

"Who are you and how did you find this place?" He, judging by its voice, asked. His voice wasn't exactly demanding but it still had some authority in it.

"Well, I, uh, my name is (Y/N) and I was just wanting to see what were in these woods. I ended up just following these fireflies here." You explained quickly, not wanting to get on his bad side.

"Oh.....alright then. Come, would you like to sit with me and read this book?" He asked, his form relaxed after you had mentioned the fireflies.

You nodded and moved to sit next to him, keeping a respectful distance between you two.

The fireflies returned to hovering around his shoulders and they even went around yours aswell. They provided an excellent light for reading.

Eventually, you and the skeleton had stopped reading and had moved to watch the fireflies fly around in the clearing around you two. You were busy drawing the scene in your sketchbook while some nice fireflies lit up around you, letting you see.

The moon was beginning to set and the fires were beginning to sort of disappear when you finished. You stored the book back in your bag and looked towards the skeleton only to see he was already looking at you. Purple fireflies illuminating his face. He looked cute that way.
Blushing you stood up and he did the same, walking closer to you.

"Wait, will you come back tomorrow?" He asked, grabbing one of your hands in his skeletal one.

"Sure." You answered after thinking for a bit. But...

"If you tell me your name." You added, surprised you hadn't asked earlier. He looked surprised before he answered.

"Nightmare. My name is Nightmare." He said, looking down slightly. You just smiled.

"That's a very nice name, I'll see you tomorrow then." With that, you slipped out of his grasp and ran off towards the forest.

You stopped at the edge of the treeline, turning around to wave at Nightmare.
He waved back and you turned to see purple fireflies already making a path for you.

You would definitely come back tomorrow night.
