Chapter 34: You’re My Favorite Song

You lift me off the ground
You're inspiration, you helped me find my sound,
Just like a baseline a half-time
You hold down the groove
That's why I'm counting on you

And if I heard you on the radio
I'd never wanna change a single note
It's what I tried to say all along
You're my favorite song.

My favorite part about the vacation was going to Disney. There were not many people there the few days we went there. I knew mom had something to do with it, but I don’t know how she did it. His parents, aunt, uncle, and cousin went their separate ways to leave Max and I alone. Jim stayed in the background like he promised.

“How many princesses do we have to meet?” Max asked me.

I replied, “Two: Cinderella and Jasmine. Jasmine is Mar’s favorite. I already took a picture with the cast of toy story because they are Dave’s favorite.”

“What’s your favorite?”

“I liked Rapunzel,” I laughed, “What was your favorite?”

“Probably toy story,” he laughed, “I loved that movie as a kid. Do you want something to eat?”

“Can we get dippin’ dots?”

“Sure,” he stopped at the dippin’ dots cart, “What kind?”

“Cookies and cream please?”

“Cookie and cream,” he told the lady.

She gave him the cookies and cream after Max paid and he got two spoons for us. He’s so cute. We sat down at the closest table we could see and Max gave me one of the spoons.

“Is cookies and cream your favorite?”

I nodded, “It’s my favorite flavor of ice cream too. I do like the cotton candy though too.”

“It’s my favorite too.”

“What else are we doing today?” I asked.

He shrugged, “I figured after we’re done with the pictures we could go on a few of the rides then stop and get something to eat before meeting up with my family again.”

“Sounds good,” I smiled.

“Are you having fun?”

I nodded, “This is one of the greatest days I’ve had in a really long time. It’s also the most romantic date ever.”

“I’m glad you like it,” he smiled at me.

After I took the last bite of dippin’ dots I leaned up and kissed him. I’ve been craving to kiss him all day. He’s been extra sweet today and even bought me an Ariel necklace at one of the stores. He deepened the kiss and put one of his hands on my face. I could have stayed there forever. I was out of breath when we pulled away.

“What was that for?” he asked.

I shrugged, “Just because. I’ve wanted to do that all day.”

He chuckled, “I’m glad you did. I seem to care about you more than I ever expected.”

“I could say the same to you.”

He kissed my cheek, “Should we continue with our day?”

“Yeah,” I blushed.

After meeting the princesses and taking pictures with them I realized there was something I forgot to do. I led Max so we were standing right in front of the castle and took out Alice’s book.

“What are you doing?” Max laughed.

“You are going to take a picture of me and the book in front of Cinderella’s castle.”

He shook his head, “She’s going to smack you.”

“All in love,” I laughed.

He took the picture and I sent it to Alice immediately then we continued on with our day. As we waited in line to get on one of the rides I got a text back from Alice.

“What does it say?” Max asked.

I laughed as I read it to him, “If you have a dozen pictures lined up to send to me I’m going to smack you so hard when you get back.”

“Where’s the nearest Disney character?” Max asked.

“Why?”

“Hey Mickey!” Max called.

Mickey walked over and waved at us.

“Hey Mickey can you do us a favor and take a picture with this book?” Max asked.

“Max!” I laughed.

He laughed, “And you weren’t thinking it?”

I shrugged and gave in, handing the book to Mickey. Mickey and I posed with the book as Max took a picture.

“I say we make a day of this,” I told him, “and send her pictures periodically throughout the day.”

“Then post them,” Max suggested, “Therefore she can’t complain that much because you’ll be promoting her book well.”

“Genius,” I grinned.

“Before we turn this into a day, do you have the souvenirs you need?”

“I think so. I have gifts for mom, dad, Mar, Dave, and Alice.”

“Okay on with our plan.”

“Let’s do it,” I laughed.

After a half hour and nearly a dozen pictures to Alice she started only responding with emojis. Some were sarcastic faced emojis while others were fists ready to punch me. My response was simply another picture. We met up with his family for dinner and Jim requested a seat for us in the back of the restaurant just to be safe. I’ve liked his family so far. His aunt and uncle are really nice and treated me like I’m a normal person. His cousin freaked out at first, but Max calmed him down. When he got used to the idea of me being around his cousin was nice too.

“What do you plan on doing after you graduate?” his aunt asked him.

“I’m going to college. I prefer to stay close though so I won’t be going out of state to college or anything.”

“What about you Demetria? Have you graduated?”

“I did, yes,” I answered, “I received my GED. Currently I have a clothing line with a friend of the family’s and I’m helping my cousin and best friend with their music careers. Those are pretty much the only plans I have so far though.”

“Oh, well that sounds fun. Do you plan on going into music?”

“Not really,” I shook my head, “that may be the family business but I’d prefer music to just be a hobby. I featured on my cousin’s songs and I’m writing songs for my best friend, but I think that’s as far as I’ll go in the music business. I prefer fashion. I work with my mom’s best friend Maria at her company.”

“Maria Carmichael?” Max’s mom asked.

I nodded, “Yeah that’s her. Her and my mom have been best friends since high school.”

“Wow, she’s incredibly successful.”

“She is and she worked hard for it too. She was denied acceptance for her first choice art and design school after she graduated high school. She worked on her grades at a community college before they would accept her. Aunt Maria definitely had to work her way up from the bottom to get into the fashion world. She promised me she would help with my fashion career as long as I was willing to work hard for it. She believes hard work makes dreams come true.”

“She sounds like a smart businesswoman,” his aunt replied.

“She is,” I smiled, “Definitely. I like that I’m surrounded by so many inspiring, hard working women. My mom, my aunt, and my parent’s friends earned their successes separately by working hard. It’s easy to look at my family and think we’re successful because we’re all related to each other or because we’re all friends with each other, but that’s not what it’s like. If you look into each of our lives separately they all started from the bottom.”

“Really? That’s remarkable,” his mom said.

I nodded.

“Would you give us an example?” she asked.

“Sure,” I smiled. I like that they’re genuinely interested in my family. It doesn’t seem fake. It doesn’t seem like they want to know my family because we’re famous. They want to know them because I’m important to Max. That’s an okay reason for me to talk all I want about my family. “My uncle, for example, became famous at a young age for acting and music, but he didn’t tell anybody he had a sister. So my mom grew up completely average. She was bullied in school and she rose up and started a movement in her high school to stop bullying. Before long she released music about stopping bullying and staying strong. Sure my uncle helped, but my mom did all the hard work. Then there’s my aunt who started on Disney channel. She was really famous before she even knew my family.”

“Those are great role models to surround yourself with,” his aunt said. “It sounds like you’ve had a great upbringing.”

I looked over at Max and he shook his head. So they don’t know. I have to say I’m surprised they haven’t heard it on TV or anything. It’s nice of them to say I’ve had a great upbringing, but I didn’t. I’ve been in rehab and I’ve done drugs and drank alcohol.

“Um, I don’t mean to be rude,” I replied, “But have you heard anything about me on the news? Or in magazines or newspapers?”

Everyone at the table seemed to shake their heads.

“Oh…”

“Is something wrong?” his aunt asked.

“Demetria, you don’t have to do this,” Max said.

“Yes I do,” I said, “because they can’t have the wrong perception of me.”

“Is something wrong dear?”

“I don’t want any of you to have the wrong idea of me. If Max didn’t tell you and you haven’t seen the news about me then I need to be the one to tell you. From the outside it may seem like I had this perfect childhood, but that’s wrong. I didn’t have a good childhood. In fact, not too long ago I was in rehab. I was in rehab for depression, self-harming, drug problems, and alcohol problems. I got myself into a lot of trouble and I scared my family. I was in rehab for a year and when I got out I relapsed and ended up in the hospital after an accident with some old friends of mine. From there I was sent to live in a sober living house to teach me how to transition from rehab into the real world. Max and I did meet at the mall, that isn’t a lie, but there’s more to it than that.”

“We talked once at the mall,” Max interrupted, “but we only exchanged numbers that day. The second time I saw her was when I went to my therapy session. We go to the same therapist’s office and we go to the same group therapy. We were able to connect and finally talk to each other because we both realized we have so much in common, like our mental illnesses. It gave us common ground and helped us realize why we were each so scared of dating each other.”

“I know what all of you probably thought when Max said he was dating me, and I don’t blame you. I do not want you to think I come from this perfect family. My mom and my aunt all have mental illnesses. My aunt went to rehab when she was my age and my mom had to have an intervention and spent months and years trying to stay in recovery from her self-harming problem. I like surrounding myself with positive people, but I also like surrounding myself with people who can understand. I was scared to get to know Max at first and I was surprised he was even talking to me. Once I realized we could relate to each other on a personal, more private level it was easier to talk to him.”

“Why are you telling us this?” his uncle asked.

“Because if Max is as close to his family as I am to mine then you deserve to know. I don’t want to hide myself from you and I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I wouldn’t tell this to just anybody. In fact if I’m in an interview the only thing they would know is that I’m dating Max, he’s my best friend, and we met at the mall, but I’m not in an interview I’m talking to his family. I believe that there are no secrets in families. I will be completely honest with you. I’m not a good influence to people sometimes. I’m ashamed of what my little sister and my little brother watched me do over the years, and maybe I won’t even be good for Max at times. I’m sure we’ll have our problems and we’ll fight like any other couple and there may be times when I just want to give up, but I’m okay with that because all I’ve ever wanted growing up was something real. You can probably imagine that growing up as famous as my family is comes with its sacrifices. To the public I was the perfect daughter, but none of it was real. It was fake, I was fake, but now I’m not so I won’t pretend to be. I want you to know who I am because you’re Max’s family. I don’t want you to be fooled by what you’ll hear about me.”

“My dear girl,” his aunt said with tears in her eyes, “We’ve gotten the completely wrong perception of you. When Max told us you were famous we were surprised and we didn’t know why or how he ended up with you. Then when you arrived you even looked like you were famous with your bodyguard at your side. We spoke with my sister and brother-in-law and they only had nice things to say about you, but they also felt like they didn’t really know you. They only knew what they saw in magazines. Seeing you here now, after you’ve told us the truth, I realize why you put on a mask for us. It is your celebrity mask; the mask you have to put on so you can have the littlest bit of privacy you can get. I didn’t expect your story to be so heartbreaking, Demetria, but I do understand what my nephew sees in you.”

“You do?” I asked.

She nodded, “He sees a survivor. He sees a fighter; a fighter who fights to live just like he fights to live. He sees someone who struggles just as much as he has in his life. Max finally has someone he can relate to. He probably doesn’t know that we noticed, but we’ve seen how much he’s struggled in his life to be happy. Two people like you who’ve grown up with mental illnesses or terrible childhoods, deserves to be with someone who understands everything they’ve been through and will stand by them no matter what.”

“Thank you,” Max smiled at her, “That means a lot to me. I knew you’d be skeptical of her but I really hoped you’d see what I see.”

“I do,” she smiled, “I see it.”

I looked at Max as he smiled at me. I smiled back and he put his arm around my shoulders making sure to kiss my cheek before looking over at his aunt and uncle again. His uncle still hadn’t said anything, but you could see by the look in his eyes what he was thinking. They like me. In that moment I knew what my mom wanted me to do here. She wanted me to relate to people on a real level. She wanted me to feel like an average person because I needed to learn how to interact with people. I needed to learn how to take off what his aunt called my ‘celebrity mask’ if I had any of chance of not seeming like I’m perfect or stuck up to the public. In that moment, I knew I accomplished that. I can’t tell everybody the whole story like I told them, but I can take off the mask and be an average person even when I’m around the paparazzi or an interviewer. I will seem real. I will seem like an average person because that’s exactly what I am.
