Chapter 33: Me, Myself, and Time

I just entered this brand new world,
And I'm so open hearted.
I know I got a long way to go but I'm
I'm just getting started.

I'm over my head
And I know it, I know it.
I'm doing my best
Not to show it, to show it.
Whatever it takes to be,
What I was meant to be,
I'm gonna try.
Cause I'm living the dream
And I know it, I know it
I'm trying my best
Not to blow it, to blow it
And I know everything will be fine.

The time finally came for my vacation. Grandma moved into our house. She was sad to sell her old house, but she wanted to be close to family. My parents told her she could have the top floor of our house. We moved the rooms we used to some of the lower floors of the house and they changed the top floor to grandma’s own apartment. I think she likes it better that way. I told them I didn’t have to go on the trip, but they insisted and said I deserved a vacation. I finished packing my bag and mom walked in and sat on my bed.

“What time are they coming?” she asked.

“Any minute,” I replied.

“Sit down with me. I want to talk to you before you leave.”

“Okay,” I nodded and sat next to her.

How are things going with Max?”

“Great, why?”

“Because I can see how much you care about him.”

“Mom, is this one of those relationship and sex talks?”

She laughed, “That’s exactly what this is.”

“Mom,” I groaned.

“Let me have this talk.”

“Okay, go.”

“I can see how much you care about him. I can see it because it reminds me of your father and I.”

“Really?” I smiled.

She nodded, “Your father and I were crazy about each other. We were scared to take that step, but once we did we never looked back. I know you’re probably scared of getting close to him, but I want you to take that step.”

“You do?” I asked.

“Yes,” she smiled, “I’m not one of those parents who is going to tell you to wait until you’re ready and to be careful. If I had been careful and waited I might not be with your father right now. On this vacation I want you to be honest about your feelings for him. I don’t want you to go your whole life being scared because that’s only going to lead to regrets.”

“I’ll be honest, I promise.”

“But I do have to warn you, if you come home pregnant you’ll be in trouble.”

“Mom!” I laughed.

“Promise me!” she laughed.

“I won’t come home pregnant.”

“Good,” we both laughed.

“Do we really remind you of you and dad?” I asked her.

“You do,” she answered, “and it makes me smile.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re growing up so nicely and becoming such a lovely young lady,” she said. “You remind me of myself when I was your age.”

“And dad made you happy? All these years he’s made you happy?”

She nodded, “I might just be one of the happiest people alive. Your father understood me when I was a teenager and we grew together over the years. He knows me better than anyone and I want you to have your chance to find somebody like that.”

“That’s why you want me to go?” I smiled.

“You’re growing up. You’re almost 18 years old and I want you to have the chance to make your own decisions. I know you’ve been surrounded by family for most of your life, and maybe it’s sheltered you a little bit, but I want you to take risks and try new things. So go to Florida. See what it’s like to be an average person.”

“Average? Mom, people recognize me everywhere.”

“Your bodyguard will keep his distance and I’ve arranged so Disney won’t be busy the days you’re there. So be yourself okay? Be your beautiful, unique self and forget that our family is famous okay?”

A few tears rolled down my cheeks and I wiped them away as I nodded, “I will mom. Thank you.”

She hugged me, “You should never forget who you are, but you should never let fame get in the way of living your life.”

“You’re the greatest, mom.”

“Should we go see if Max and his family are here?”

“Yeah,” I nodded.

Mom carried my bag down the stairs for me and I carried my purse. Max and his parents were in the living room talking to my dad, Dave, Mar, and Alice. Mar saw mom and I enter the room and she ran over to us. I smiled and picked her up.

“Miss you!” she hugged me.

I laughed, “I’ll miss you too. I’ll call though, I promise.”

“Present?”

“Okay I’ll get you a present too.”

“Good!”

I hugged Dave next, “I’ll bring you a present too.”

“Okay,” he laughed.

Alice hugged me after, “If I get a text about how ridiculous my book is I’ll smack you when you get home.”

I laughed, “It did cross my mind actually. In that case maybe I’ll just take pictures with the book at different places in Florida and send them to you.”

She rolled her eyes, “Have a good trip.”

I hugged dad last, “Bye daddy.”

“Bye, D. Get me something good.”

“I will,” I laughed.

My bodyguard drove us to the airport where we had to wait a half hour before the plane let us on. I sat next to Max and he played a game on his phone while we were waiting.

“Aw,” he complained, “I died.”

I laughed, “No high score for you.”

“Are they boarding yet?”

“No not yet,” I shook my head. “Are you excited?”

“I haven’t seen some of my family since last year when we went.”

“I can’t wait to meet them. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Florida. When we go to Disney I’ll take pictures with Maria’s favorite princess for her and I’ll get her a souvenir.”

“You’re a great sister, you know that?”

“Thank you,” I smiled.

He locked his phone, put it back in his pocket, and put his arm around me.

“Will your family like me?” I asked him.

“I’m sure they will.”

“Did you… you know, tell them about me?”

“Yeah,” he nodded, “I didn’t want to surprise them. I told them not to treat you like a celebrity though. I don’t want you to worry about all eyes being on you because it’s supposed to be a vacation.”

“It’s okay,” I smiled, “sometimes that’s just how my life is.”

He sighed, “I’m still getting used to it, you know?”

“I know,” I nodded, “I’ve always been scared of people not liking the way my life is and leaving because they can’t handle it. I know it’s a lot to get used to. I mean the paparazzi following me around and everybody on the street coming up and asking for pictures. Not everybody can handle the life my family lives.”

“I’m going to be completely honest with you Demetria because you’re right. I still don’t know how you handle all the attention and chaos that comes with being famous, but that’s no reason to leave. I can get used to it if it means spending a little more time with you. The right people who care about you won’t be scared away by anything. The time we spend with you alone, when you’re being you, will make the chaos worth it.”

I smiled, “I’m happy you understand. I know things can’t be as private or personal as you might be used to.”

“Demetria, nothing about this relationship is anything I’m used to remember?”

“That’s right,” I laughed, “Neither one of us has been in a real, official relationship before.”

“Exactly,” he smiled, “so we get to make our own rules.”

“I like that.”

We boarded the plane and I rested my head on his shoulder. “Go to sleep,” Max told me, “I’ll wake you up later.”

“MmKay,” I mumbled.

“Morning,” Max nudged me a little.

I lifted my head off his shoulder and opened my eyes, “Are we there?”

“Yeah,” he chuckled, “we’re here.”

We got off the plane and his parents helped my bodyguard get us out of the airport without anybody spotting us. Max and I sat in the backseat and laughed as my mom’s song came on the radio.

“She followed me!”

“She’s everywhere!”

My bodyguard laughed at us, “I’m telling her you said that.”

“No!” I laughed.

As we got closer to his family’s house I leaned over and whispered to Max, “Are you sure they’ll like me? I’m kind of nervous.”

“Don’t be nervous,” he whispered back, “I’ll introduce you to everyone, they’ll be nice, and I’ll give you a tour of the house.”

“I’m not used to being around other people Max.”

“That’s why you need to do this.”

“Okay,” I nodded, “You’re right. My mom told me the same thing. I need to meet new people and know how to interact with people who are not family, fans, or interviewers.”

Max helped me out of the vehicle as we pulled into his family’s driveway. It was a nice sized house with a long driveway and a big yard. Max held my hand and my bodyguard helped carry in all the bags. His family came out and greeted all of us. They hugged each of us one by one before we settled into the living room and Max introduced me to everyone. The house belongs to his aunt, uncle, and cousin.

“How did you two meet?” his aunt asked us.

“At the mall,” Max said.

“How sweet, have you ever been to Florida Demetria?”

I nodded, “A couple times, but never very long. I went here once for one of my mom’s concerts and once for a vacation, but the vacation only lasted two days.”

“We hope you enjoy it. How do you feel about going out to dinner with all of us tonight?”

“I would love to,” I smiled.

“Will your… friend… be joining us?”

“You can call him Jim,” I told them, “and yes.”

“I will keep my distance if you’d like,” Jim said.

“Jim isn’t just my bodyguard,” I explained, “he has been with my family for a long time. He is a close friend of the family.”

“I will not be in the way,” Jim replied, “but I will be close by.”

“We were just wondering,” His uncle said, “We didn’t mean to sound rude or anything.”

“You weren’t,” I assured them, “It’s okay that you asked. I understand that these aren’t exactly normal circumstances.”

“We have to admit we weren’t sure whether to believe it when we heard you’d be coming. We are glad you’re here though. You are obviously important to our nephew so we look forward to getting to know you.”

“Thank you,” I smiled and looked at Max.

He put his arm around me and smiled, “That means a lot to me. Thank you for letting me bring her.”

“Get going,” his aunt smiled, “I’m sure you have a lot you want to show her.”

Max nodded, taking my hand, and let me out the back door.

“Where are we going?” I asked him.

“I want to show you how close Disney is. They have a large hill back here and we’re going to climb to the top of it.”

We walked to the top of the hill, which was large than I expected it to be, and he told me to close my eyes before I could see the view. He put one hand over my eyes and the other on my waist.

I giggled, “Is it really this big of a deal?”

“Yes,” he laughed.

He took his hand off my eyes and I looked out at the view. In the distance, probably anywhere between five or ten miles, was Disney. I could actually see it from his aunt and uncle’s house.

I smiled at him, “They have a view like this?”

He nodded, “Pretty great right?”

“It’s amazing.”

“It’s one of my favorite views.”

“I can see why.”

“Want a picture?”

I nodded immediately, making him laugh. He took out his phone and I put my arms around him while he held up his phone to take a picture of us. He made sure the view was in the background of the photo and I smiled.

“Make sure you send it to me.”

“I will. They have a pool too. Want to swim first?”

“Sure,” I smiled, “I’d love that.”

He put his phone back in his pocket and took my hand again. I wrapped my free arm around the hand that was holding mine as we walked. I’m going to love this vacation.
