Clementine and Violet were outside of the school scavenging for anymore supplies. The supplies they had were very minimal and they used most of them to fortify the school. That still wasn't enough to cover the entire school. Right now they were walking down a path where Willy said he saw pieces of sheet metal.
Violet: "You sure this is the right path?"
Clem: "Willy said the pieces were around here."
Clem stops when she sees the pieces of sheet metal laying on a tree trunk.
Clem: "Looks like he was right."
They walk over to the trunk and start picking up the metal. They hear a tree branch snap behind them. Violet and Clem quickly pull out their bows and turn around to see a woman who looked like she was in her thirties. She was wearing a parka and was very dirty. She had a 223 Remington rifle aimed at them.
Clem: "Who are you?"
??: "My name's Shelby. You?" She said in a Texan accent.
Violet: "Don't worry about it."
Clem: "What are you doing here?"
Shelby: "Just passing by."
Clem: "Where you headed?"
Shelby: "I can't tell you that."
Violet: "Why not?"
Shelby: "You don't trust me, why should I trust you?"
Violet: "Because I could kill you right now."
Clem: "You with Delta?"
Shelby: "Delta? What is Delta?"
Violet notices she's carrying a big bag on her back.
Violet: "What's in the bag?"
Shelby: "Supplies. I'd be willing to share if you put down your weapons."
Violet looks at Clem and shakes her head.
Violet: "Can we trust her?" She says to Clem.
Clementine examines the woman.
Shelby: "I just need a place to stay for the night, I don't want to hurt anybody."
Clem lowers her bow and nods at Violet, she also lowers her bow. Shelby lowers her rifle as well.
Clem: "You sure you're not with Delta?"
Shelby: "Honey, I don't even know what this "Delta" is that you're talking about."
Clementine looks at Violet and then at Shelby.
Clem: "Let's make a deal. You help us move this stuff, and we'll give you a place to stay."
Shelby looks at the metal and then at Clementine.
Shelby: "Deal."
They start picking up the pieces of metal and Shelby stops Clementine.
Shelby: "Here."
She hands Clem her rifle.
Shelby: "Just so you know I mean no harm."
Clem nods and takes the rifle. They start walking back towards the school once they collect the materials.
They make it back to the school and Aasim opens the gate for them. He looks confused once he sees Shelby and Violet walking away with the materials.
Aasim: "Who's that?"
Clem: "That is Shelby. She's gonna stay here for the night."
Aasim: "Sure we can trust her?"
Clem: "She helped us bring this stuff back. She even gave me her rifle to show peace."
They look over at Violet and Shelby and notice that Louis is there with "Charles" in hand pointing it at Shelby. Clem and Aasim quickly run over.
Clem: "Louis stop!"
Louis: "Who is she?"
Shelby: "Well pardon me handsome fella, my name is Shelby."
Louis notices her heavy Texan accent.
Louis: "Is she Ruby's mom?"
Violet: "Louis!"
Shelby:"My my, you people are so young. Where are your parents?"
Clem: "No parents. Just us."
Shelby: "Wow, you kids sure know what you're doing."
Clem: "We do what we have to. Come on, let's
go meet everyone else."
Clementine takes Shelby around and introduces herself to the rest of the kids. They all got along with her and as expected, Shelby and Ruby got along well the most. They were sitting at the tables talking about their old days back in Texas before it all went to shit. Eventually, Omar finishes making the food and they all sit at the tables to feast on their meal. Clem decided to take the opportunity to get to know more about Shelby.
Clem: "Where are you heading?"
Shelby: "I'm heading back north of here, since The Maulers have been killed off."
Clem: "The Maulers?"
Shelby: "It was this settlement ran by monstrous men. They kidnapped women and children and did horrible things to them. I had to get away from there to avoid being their next prey. But now that they're gone, I'm heading back north."
Clem: "Any place in particular."
Shelby: "This settlement called Sunset. I used to live there but left because I wanted to be as far away as possible from The Maulers."
Clem: "They're the ones who took out The Maulers?"
Shelby: "Yeah. They also had a war with other settlements as well. Sunset came out on top and is now the most dominant settlement in north Virginia."
They continue eating until an idea pops up in Shelby's head.
Shelby: "You kids should come with me!"
Everybody stops eating and they look at Shelby.
Clem: "Why's that?"
Shelby: "Sunset is really safe. It is filled with a bunch of good people. I just hope Jack isn't around but other than him, excellent people. They have food, shelter, medicine, and just about anything you might need."
All the kids look at each other and then look at Clem.
Clem: "I don't know. We'll have to think about it."
Shelby: "Well that's perfectly fine. Wouldn't want to rush you out of your home. Have you kids always been here?"
Clem: "Me and AJ got here almost two years ago."
Violet: "The rest of us have always been here."
Shelby: "Have there been any others?"
Clem: "There were a few others, but they didn't make it."
Violet and Clem look at each other.
Clem: "There was also someone else that arrived here with me and AJ."
Shelby: "What happened to the person?"
Clem looks down in sadness.
Clem: "He left. He couldn't handle it anymore."
Shelby: "I'm sorry."
Omar and Ruby get up and go to their dorms. Aasim watches them as they leave.
Aasim: "I'm gonna go to bed as well. Goodnight."
Shelby: " 'night."
Aasim gets up and walks away to the dorms. AJ finishes his food and looks up at Clem.
AJ: "I'm done. I'm gonna go to sleep."
Clem: "Ok goodnight, goofball."
AJ: "Stop. I don't like that name."
Clem: "You'll always be goofball to me."
AJ: "Whatever, goodnight."
He gets up from the bench and walks away. Shelby looks at AJ and then back at Clem.
Shelby: "You're his mother?"
Clem: "No. I've just been taking care of him since he was born."
Shelby: "Where are his parents?"
Clem: sigh "They didn't make it."
Shelby: "So you've been taking care of him all by yourself?"
Clem: "It wasn't just me. That person we came into the school with, his name is Y/N. He helped me take care of him and was like a father to him."
Shelby: "At least you had help."
Clem: "Yeah, I did."
Violet gets up from the table.
Violet: "I'm going to sleep too."
Clem: "Yeah I think we should head to bed."
Shelby: "That sounds like a good idea."
Clem and Shelby get up as well and Shelby looks at Clem.
Shelby: "Mind showing me where I'll be staying?"
Clem: "Follow me."
They start walking into the dorms and Clem leads Shelby to the available dorm. She opens the door for Shelby.
Shelby: "Why thank you young lady."
Shelby enters the room and is about to close the door.
Clem: "Hey, Shelby."
She stops and turns around.
Clem: "About Y/N. You haven't seen him out there have you?"
Shelby: "I don't recall, what did he look like?"
Clem: "He has Y/C/E eyes, long Y/C/H hair, and is about six feet tall."
Shelby: "I don't think I have. Although I do remember around sometime last year, a person on a four wheeler. I tried to wave them down but they kept on driving. I remember them having long Y/C/H hair, but I couldn't see their face because they were wearing a bandanna. Think it might be him?"
Clem: "I don't know. Thanks anyways."
Shelby: "No problem. Thank you for the hospitality."
Clem: "You're welcome."
Shelby: "Well, I'm gonna get some shut eye. Been walking all day and I'm about as tired as a fat dog on a walk."
Clem: "I recommend you do that. Goodnight Shelby."
Shelby: "Goodnight, sweetheart."
She closes the door. Clementine walks back to her dorm and enters. She sees AJ already asleep on the bed. She goes over to her bed and lays down and is looking at the ceiling.
Clem: "I'll find you someday, Y/N. I'll try to make it up to you."
