Melody's POV

"Mama!"

Waking up from my deep slumber, I hear my baby yelling for me. Hurrying out of my room, I run down the hall and to a small room nearby. Rubbing my eyes from tiredness, my vision clears up to see a small three year old girl sitting up in her canopy bed.

"What's wrong baby?"

I sit down and pull her into my arms. Running my hands through her wild curls calms her down a bit. Tears run down her face as she looks at me with innocent eyes.

"I had a nightmare."

"Aw baby it's okay. I'm here now and nothing is going to happen to you. What was the nightmare sweetie?"

My hands wipe away her tears as she sniffles trying to stop crying. She wraps her arms around my neck and hugs me softly.

"Aw my sweet little girl... tell me."

"Mama why don't I have a daddy?"

I freeze in shock. Never had these words come out her mouth. Never had she asked about her dad and why he wasn't here or if she even had one.

"What are you talking about sweetie? Of course you have a daddy. Where is this coming from?"

The little girl pulls away and looks at me with a pouty face, "Mia and Lucy we're making fun of me yesterday. They said my daddy didn't love me and that's why he's never here. They said I don't have one anymore."

Anger courses through my veins as I think about the two little brats from daycare. Their moms are like Hollywood plastics who have nothing better in life to do then talk about other moms. So because of this their children listen and repeat.

I hold my baby's face in my hands and rub her cheeks with my thumbs, "Baby no you do have a daddy. He loves you very much."

She shakes her head and pulls away from my bear hug. Pouting even more she crosses her arms and crocodile tears start to fall.

"Then where is he? Why doesn't he pick me up from daycare? Or take me to get ice cream. All my friends daddies came in and read stories with us but not my daddy."

A tear slides down my face. I thought I would have a few more years to go until I had to tell her.

"Nova my sweet little girl... your daddy loves you so much. More than anything... more than me."

Nova smiles as I grin widely.

"Your daddy can't be here with us anymore."

I move and sit beside her with my back on the wall. Holding her small hand I bring it up to my lips and kiss it.

"God told daddy that it was time to go with him up in the sky. He's in heaven now baby. And he's looking out for us. Daddy is an angel now. He will always be with you whether you see him or not. Do you understand sweetie?"

Nova nods slowly looking up at the ceiling, "So daddy is up in the sky and he can't come down?"

"Yes baby."

"And he's watching over us making sure we are happy."

"That's right."

Nova smiles, "Well then I'm happy my daddy is my angel."

After showering myself and bathing Nova, I pick out our outfits for the day. For myself, a yellow romper and brown gladiator sandals. For Nova, a white long quarter sleeve with blue jean shorts and brown sandals like myself. She grabs her crossbody purse and stuffs a few toys into it then runs down the hallway.

"Hey don't you dare run down those stairs. You fall it's gonna be your fault."

"I know mama."

Hearing the tv turn on downstairs, I decide to take this time to do my makeup and hair. Hurrying to my room I sit in front of my vanity mirror and get to work.

Staring at my reflection, I then run my eyes over my entire face. Full lips, almond shaped eyes, not too big nose and perfectly arched eyebrows. My light caramel complexion really set off my honey colored eyes.

Shaking my head, I remember that I needed to meet my best friend, Loran, for brunch. After quickly doing my makeup I pull my sleek straight black and brown ombré hair into a ponytail. Looking at my reflection once more, I am finally happy and ready to go. I grab my purse and sunglasses then walk out the room.

As I pass by the framed pictures on the wall, I stop at one specific photo and frown. Liam. He stands in his military uniform with me by his side. This is when he was officially in the military, just out of bootcamp. He was so excited that day. He told me that was the day he knew I was the one for him. Because I had been by his side for so long and even through fights and problems we always worked it out. We talked about getting married but then the day came that he was taken away from me... from us... Nova and I.

I shake my head to get out of my thoughts then smile and kiss my finger then hold it to the photo. Every time I pass the picture I do this, and for some reason after the sadness of looking at it, it passes by and I feel okay again.

When I finally make it down the stairs I see Nova sitting on the couch watching paw patrol. I don't know why the kids go all crazy over the show but hey it keeps em' quiet.

"Alright Nova let's go hun."

She nods and turns off the tv then jumps off the couch. Grabbing her kid shades off the table, she slides them onto her face and walks over to me.

"I love my little mini me." I says as I pat her bun lightly.

"Mama you're going to mess up my hair!"

She shoves away my hand then hugs my leg. She's such a sassy sweetheart.

"Sorry baby. You ready for school?"

She nods and follows me out the house. After locking the door, we make our way to my Hyundai Santa Fe and I strap her into her car seat. Getting into the drivers seat, I buckle up and turn on kidz bop. Another sacrifice I have to make for having a child. No tv and no music until Nova's away or asleep.

"I'm at a payphone, trying to go home. All of my change I spent on you."

I smile and glance into the rear view mirror at Nova while she tries to sing the words of the song. She fails miserably but she's cute while doing it.

After ten more minutes of kidz bop torture, we finally make it to daycare. Getting out and unstrapping Nova, I see a huge smile appear on her face as she sees a friend.

"Hi Reece!" Nova yells as she jumps down from the car still holding my hand.

The short adorable three year old boy who was walking with his mom turns around and waves, "Hi Nova!"

The two disappear into the building as Nova and I follow. I look down at her with a smirk. She glances up at me and frowns.

"He's my friend mama. Boys are gross. All the girls have boyfriends but I don't want one."

I smile and wonder how I did such a good job with this child, "Good you don't need boys. Not right now anyways."

Nova smiles and nods then looks over at Farrah and her dad, "Mama why don't you have a boyfriend? If daddy isn't coming back then you will be all alone."

My smile fades as I look at the little girl who was worried about me and my happiness.

"Baby I'm happy with just you. I promise."

"Mama it's okay. I won't be mad and daddy won't either. I have to go now see you later mama!"

She runs into her classroom and her teacher waves at me through the window. Standing still in shock of the wise words of a toddler, I feel tears swelling in my eyes. Taking a deep breath, I turn around and make my way back to my car.

Hey everyone thanks so much for reading the first chapter!! Just so y'all know I work with kids so I know how most of them speak. Some can't speak as well as Nova but a lot can and never stop talking. 😂 Also the angel thing is true. A child in my class literally lost her dad and she came up to me and said my daddy's an angel he's looking down at me from the sky. I was just in awe of how smart she was and how strong she was handling not having her dad anymore when she's only four years old. Anyways let me know what you think in the comments!!!
