"Oh my god, she's awake!" Lily hears as she opens her eyes. She looks up to see her parents, her sister and Kurt all standing over her.
"Dad?!" She says sleepily, "What are you doing? You should be resting!"
"Still as controlling as ever" Her mom teases, looking like she might cry at any moment.
"I'm so glad you're alright" Her sister April says, reaching out and hugging her.
"What is going on?" Lily asks, realizing she was in a bed with an IV in her arm.
"You had an accident honey" Her mom explains, grabbing her hand, "But Kurt got you to a hospital. You're going to be ok."
"What?" She says, looking at Kurt nervously as the memories from before rush to her mind.
"It was a freak accident with some pain medication. Once we got back to the hotel you took some pills for your headache and just took to many without either of us realizing." He lies, taking her hand.
"I'm just glad Kurt was so diligent, we are so thankful for him." Her dad says, patting Kurt on the back.
"Yes, thank you Kurt" Lily croaks, swallowing nervously.
"I'm just so glad you're ok" He says, leaning over and kissing her forehead.
"How long was I out?" She asks, looking up at Kurt's eyes for any sign of what he'd said to her parents.
"Not super long, its night now" Kurt says, "We've been here for a few hours, six hours to be exact."
"Am I...ok?" She asks in a quiet tone, "Will I still be able to go with the band to Europe?"
"You're fine, Kurt is right—it was a freak accident. The doctor said you can go but I don't know if that's such a good idea, its just so soon." Her mom says.
"Lily will be fine mom" April says without looking at her. Lily can tell she's pissed about the drugs but also glad she's alive.
"Don't worry about me" Lily says, feeling horrible. Her dad was just starting to return to normal life little by little, and then she makes a stupid mistake and sends her family's life in a tailspin once again.
"Alright, I see you woke up Miss Hopper" Says a man who Lily assumes is her doctor, "Your vitals look good, we can discharge you very soon, I'd just like to talk to you alone for a minute."
"What?" Asks her mom looking confused.
"Its probably just a standard talk for any sort of drug situation—even accidents. I'll be out in a minute mom" Lily says with a forced smile.
"Lets go wait in the hall, get Lily's stuff" Kurt offers awkwardly. Lily shoots him a look, trying to say with her eyes 'distract them.'
Once everyone is out of the room the doctor pulls a chair over and looks Lily in the eye.
"Miss Hopper, I know that you did not overdose on headache medication" He says seriously.
"I know you know, you're my doctor, I'd be concerned if you didn't know" Lily says with a soft smile, trying to crack a joke so she didn't have to face what he was about to talk to her about, "And call me Lily"
"You have track marks all up and down your arm and your boyfriend told the EMTs what you had been taking. Those drugs are no joke, Lily. You will die if you keep taking heroin"
"I know, I know. I'm done with drugs after this, I swear" Lily says in a somber tone, "I know you probably hear it all the time but I actually mean it."
She doesn't seem to understand the dark irony in her words. Kurt had said the same thing to her multiple times and she never believed him. But here she was, in the same position, completely believing it herself.
"I want to believe you, but there's no way I can know for sure that you will follow through. Even if you do mean it so much can change when you walk through those doors...you should be careful who you surround yourself with..." He adds with a cough.
"What is that supposed to mean?" She asks, her attitude immediately changing.
"I saw your boyfriend's arms too—" He begins and she cuts him off.
"He's my fiancé" She snarls, "And please don't bring him into this. I'm the one who fucked up; he's the one who saved my life"
"My mistake. But all the same, he is a part of this. If you two are using together it can lead to problems down the road so you need to think long and hard over whether your relationship is healthy."
"Are you done?" She snaps, "Am I free to go?"
"Yes, yes you are, but at least consider..."
Before he can even finish his sentence Lily is out of the room and down the hall.
"Hey I'm ready!" Lily says, with a smile.
"Here, these are your clothes if you want to change." Kurt says, handing her the brown corduroy skirt and sweater she'd been wearing earlier.
"Thank you, my love," She whispers, kissing him on the cheek. She changes quickly and then joins him and her family back in the waiting room.
She was too embarrassed to look at her parents as they walked out of the building, she hated that she was lying to them but she also was thankful Kurt had initially done it, it was so much better that they didn't know.
"Do you two want to sleep at our place tonight kids?" Asks Lily's mom, tenderly brushing Lily's hair out of her face.
"That's ok mom. Thanks, we've already caused you guys enough inconvenience" Lily replies quickly.
"We wouldn't mind." She offers but Lily and Kurt both shake their heads.
"Alright, well we better head out then" Her dad says as he stands up, "I'm so glad you're alright sweetie. Never scare us like that again kiddo" He adds, kissing Lily's forehead.
"I promise I won't dad. You can trust I will never do anything like this again, I'll be more careful."
Once Lily and Kurt get into the hotel room she wraps her arms around him and begins to cry into his chest.
"Sssh, you're ok, you're ok" Kurt whispers, trying to make her feel better, "I'm so glad you're ok."
"I was so stupid, I was so dumb to think that I could do drugs with no consequences" She sobs, turning away from him and sitting down on the bed, "After all my family just went through, the stress of my dad almost dying and I did something this reckless...I don't even know what they would've done if I had...if you hadn't been there."
"Baby, you're ok." He says, sitting down on the bed and reaching out for her hand.
"I'm done with the drugs Kurt, I mean it. I'm done. We need to be done" She says and he immediately sits up straighter.
"Come on—" He begins and she interrupts him.
"NO! No 'come on,' not this time Kurt. I could've died. Do you get that?" She says and he purses his lips.
"Obviously I get that Lily." He barks back.
"I don't want to think about losing you and if we keep doing drugs I'm afraid that one of us will die Kurt, I really am. And I don't think that's a good way to start a marriage." She reasons.
"Why are you trying to be so controlling all of sudden?" He says, "You survived, people survive OD's all the time Lily, they're not as uncommon as you would think"
"Oh and how do you know this Kurt? Have you gotten much more well versed in drug culture since I left the tour?" She retorts.
"That is not fair and you know it. You were doing drugs too" He reminds her and she glares at him.
"I was doing them because I was stressed about my dad almost dying. What's your excuse?"
"My excuse was that I missed you Lily!"
"Well then maybe you should think about how much you'd miss me if I wasn't here anymore." She says sharply and he's silent for a second. He reaches out and grabs her by the shoulders, looking her dead in the eyes.
"Alright fine" He sighs, "I will try to do less drugs, for you."
Lily immediately starts to cry again, this time out of relief, "I love you Kurt. I know you think I'm being crazy, I just really don't want to lose you. I love you way too much."
"I love you too" He whispers, giving her a hug and kissing her softly, "I love you too."
