-We're a Team

When Sully woke up the following morning, she didn't expect to find her home empty.

The petite teen silently roamed the lower level of her house, resembling somewhat of a lost soul. Her curly blonde mane had became knotted through the night, and her sparking brown eyes were bloodshot. When she caught sight of herself in the morning, she freaked. She was growing more and more tired.

Her mind wandered back to the previous night, and all the events that plagued her.

First, she thought of Billy.

Sully had no idea where she stood with the male. He was beyond gorgeous. The type of guy every girl would dream to be their boyfriend. Though his attitude sort of ruined his promising image. There was no denying that he was an awful person, but Sully couldn't help but feel as if there was more to the denim clad male than what meets the eye. She just wasn't sure what exactly that was, and if it was enough for him to be redeemable.

Then, there was her.

Ever since she was young, Sully was always on spot when it came to other people's emotions. Because of this, she was very understanding of one's feelings as she felt she was able to put herself in one's shoes. It was something Sully always prided herself with being able to do. However, last night was a new experience. Something she had never felt in her entire life. She went from being able to be empathic towards others feelings to absorbing them. She wasn't even connecting with others emotions, but reading them and it wasn't just their feelings. She was able to hear the voices of Billy and other classmates, without them ever opening their mouths.

The girl let out a small groan as she threw herself on the couch. Curling up into a ball, Sully lightly ground her teeth at her bottom lip that she wedged between them. The more she came to the conclusion that she was able to read people's mind, the more anxious she became.

"I'm a freak." Sully whispered to herself.

She was a freak.

And she was alone. Both figuratively, and metaphorically.

Before the teen could wallow further, the sound of the front doorbell ringing caught her attention. Sully titled her head towards the entrance of her living room, before dropping it back onto the couches cushion. She didn't feel like getting up from her pitiful position, and greeting whoever was outside her house. Sully didn't look, nor feel presentable at the moment. However, when the rings turned into knocks, the blonde knew that she had to get up.

As Sully made her way to the front door, she ran her fingers through her knotted curls, and vigorously wiped at her eyes to get rid of any trace of her tears that had been collecting in her ducts.

Letting out a deep breath, she opened the door by a crack. Sully peered through the crack and saw a friendly face waiting for her out on the steps, with an easy smile on their face. This somewhat made the girl's spirit rise a little, as she opened the door wider.

"Steve?" Sully questioned as she took took a step towards the towering upperclassmen. "What brings you here, neighbor?"

"I'm actually here for my mom." The dark haired senior answered. "She was wondering if your mom can make the strawberry cream cake she made for the block party last Christmas. My mom is having people over, and just fell in love with that."

"Well, my mom isn't here. But I can relay that message when she comes back." Sully smiled.

Soon, the two fell into an awkward silence. Sully began to play with her fingers to stop them from nervously twitching, while Steve's hazel eyes took in their neighborhood.

Sully hadn't really been alone with Steve since her kisses with Billy, so the girl had no idea how to properly act. With the way Billy had been treating Steve since he moved here, and the incident that took place at the Byers house a week ago, it hurt Sully knowing that she was betraying her budding friendship with her neighbor, by being in lured into the bed of his enemy.

"Well, I guess I should go then. See ya' later, Sully." Steve broke the silence. He sent the younger girl a smile, before turning to walk towards his house.

As Sully watched him take a step away from her, all of her paranoid thoughts came running back. "Hey, Steve? Do you want to come in? I mean, if you're not busy and all." Sully asked, making sure that her voice didn't show any of the panic that she was feeling.

She caught the confusion Steve's eyes held when hearing of her invitation, but it was quickly overthrown by the genuine smile the boy offered her. When seeing him nod, Sully spun on her heels and hurried into her house with Steve trailing behind her.

Sully wasn't sure what came over her. She never had a boy alone with her at her house before. In fact, Steve is the first boy she ever invited inside her house. It was a rule her father made for her when she entered high school, though it wasn't a hard rule for her to follow seeing as no boy really wanted her. But here she is, inviting the one and only Steve Harrington to her house with no parental supervision to keep an eye on her.

If this was any other day, Sully would never break her father's rule, but the last few days have been stressful for her. She didn't want to be alone. She wanted to be with someone, and that someone for her at the moment was Steve. Sully couldn't help but think she was being selfish. While Steve was being a good friend to her, she was being an awful one to him.

"You okay, Sully?" Steve noticed how uncharacteristically quiet the underclassman been, and it worried him.

"I kissed Billy." Sully blurted out. Her eyes widening when realizing what she had just done. She looked over to where Steve had been sitting and watched as his eyes grew large from shock, before she decided to continue. "Twice. We kissed twice. It was after he beat you up, and all. So, I'm a terrible friend and you should jump ship now." She muttered under her breath as she looked down at her feet in shame.

As Steve remained silent, Sully took the time to finally breathe. Her delivery may not have been the best, but at least she got it done. Hopefully, the feeling of guilt will lessen now that Steve is aware she betrayed him by hooking up with his enemy.

Finally, after what felt like forever to Sully, Steve spoke.

"Why are you telling me this?" The handsome senior asked, his hazel eyes twinkling with curiosity.

"Because I don't want this to bite me in the ass, and have you angry at me." Sully bit her lip as she took in Steve's shocked expression. A part of her was prepared for this reaction. What Sully didn't expect was to see the smile that broke out onto his face. "Steve?"

"Sully, you're an independent individual. I'm not gonna stop you from being with someone, even if I think that person is the human equivalent of a garbage can." Steve chuckled. The tall teen stood up from his spot on the couch, and moved over to sit next to the petite blonde.

"Thanks, Steve." Sully whispered, her eyes stinging as tears collected in them.

"Hey. Hey, you okay?" Steve sobered up as he caught the sight of Sully's crumbling face.

"There's something else." Sully's voice wobbled as she took in a deep breath. Sully wasn't sure why, but she felt like she could trust Steve with this secret. That maybe he won't fully judge her.

"I..." Sully trailed off, not knowing where to start with this news. "This is going to sound crazy, but there's something off about...about me. I can hear things...when I touch people." Sully paused as she really didn't know what to say.

She nervously tugged on the loose string that hung from the end of her shirt, refusing to meet Steve's eyes as she continued. She knew that if her moments with Billy wasn't enough to make the boy run the other way, maybe this won't either. "Like, their minds. It sounds crazy, but after all we've been through last week it's not a far out thing. I just don't know how to explain it, or why it's happening to me."

"I'm not gonna stop being your friend, if that's what your afraid of." Steve said right away, no tremor or hesitation in his voice. She remained quiet as the older teen continued to talk. "If anything, I'm going to help you figure out why this is happening to you Sully. We're a team, and a very good one at that as you can see from our last mission. We can solve anything." Sully's wide tearful eyes shot onto Steve's in surprise.

"R-really?" Sully stammered.

Steve sent the girl another smile, before nudging his shoulder against hers. "Yeah, really. You're not alone in this. You got the whole gang, and if they don't have your back, you got me. It's gonna take a lot more than you being able to read minds, and sleeping with that asshole to get rid of me."

"We are not sleeping together." Sully quickly corrected Steve. The panic in her tone made Steve snort in amusement as he stared at the blonde beauty with a smug expression. "I'm serious!"

"Sure." Steve drawled out.

Sully couldn't help but let out a giggle at Steve's accusation. All the weight that she had been feeling earlier today was slowly being lifted, making her feel a hundred times better.
