donghyuck sat nervously. his hands clamped together and feet swinging off the chair as mark paced around the room
running his hand through his hair as he thought of what to say
"i'm sorry for whatever i did wrong mark. but please tell me what it was" donghyuck's soft voice broke mark's heart. he could hear the doubt and pain in the youngers voice
he ignored the guilt creeping into his mind. he was doing this for donghyuck's safety and no matter how much it hurt he would have to stay away from him
the risk of being targeted by other rivals was too great of one mark was willing to take
he took a deep breath before abruptly halting in front of donghyuck
he met his eyes before looking away quickly. swallowing in an attempt to rid his throat of the ball of emotions that were creeping up
"we need to end this hyuck. for your safety" mark said bluntly, not making eye contact with the younger and opting to stare at the wall behind him instead
not a sound left donghyucks open mouth
"i know nothing happened to you this time but there's a target on your back. being associated with me puts you in so much danger. it's better if we just ..."
mark made the mistake of meeting donghyucks tearful eyes
"stay apart?" donghyuck whispered, barely audible but mark heard it
the pure anguish in donghyucks voice was heartbreaking and mark could feel his throat begin to burn from his own cries trying to break through
"please mark. i promise nothing will happen to me. just don't do this" donghyuck begged, standing up from the chair and walking closer to mark
mark stared at donghyuck, his gaze cold and unforgiving
"you've already proven that not to be true. i can't be with someone who constantly puts their life as well as mine in danger" mark immediately regretted saying it after seeing how donghyucks face fell
"lo- relationships are a weakness that i don't need"
no matter how hard he tried donghyuck couldn't withhold his tears as they raced down his cheeks, his soft sobs growing intense
donghyuck nodded and looked down at his trembling hands "ok. if that's what you want" he choked out
and then he was gone
leaving mark alone in his room feeling emptier than ever
as soon as he heard donghyuck's door slam shut he grabbed the jacket he had been gifted by lucas as an apology for letting a group of ducklings in his room
yeah, he didn't know how that happened either
he sped down the stairs, not answering jeno when he asked where he was going leaving the boy confused and staring after him
he rushed out of the house, in the direction of the garage
after pulling the door open he flicked on the lights scanning the room before he set his eyes on his prize
the small but sleek black car glistened under the bright lights proudly boasting the title of a nismo gtr
he swung the door open and grinned as he ran he hands over the intricate interior
the key was always there, ready to ignite the rest of the car to life
pushing the start mark could feel the engine surge with power as it roared to life
wasting no time he carefully drove out of the garage, making sure not to damage the other pricey vessels
he glanced back at the house, lights lit in all the windows but one
he tore his gaze away from the house and sped down the twisting driveway into the brightly lit city, not caring about where the road took him

donghyuck lay awake in the light of the moon, unable to let sleep overcome him. he was drained after what felt like hours of crying
jaemin and renjun had entered on the boy being an emotional mess of the floor and jeno had to stop the duo from trying to find mark and mauling the boy
he couldn't help but felt mark was being selfish. jaemin and renjun were in the same position so why couldn't mark make an effort?
donghyuck sighed, waiting for the sound of marks return
he coughed as an attempt to rid his throat of the parched feeling, but in the end, decided to slip out of bed and make his way down to the kitchen
donghyuck was careful not to make any loud noise that could wake the sleeping inhabitants of the house and fumbled around in the dark for the light switch
he squinted to adjust his eyes to the brightness after flicking the lights on
donghyuck dragged himself to the sink, grabbing a random cup and chugging down the water
feeling sorry for himself, he dug around the freezer in the hopes of finding a sweet comfort food, much to his pleasure an unopened tub of sorbet stood there proudly, begging to be eaten
he sat lonesomely on the large island, letting himself eat mindlessly as his thoughts dragged him away from reality
he didnt hear the car park outside or the fumbling and opening of the front door
what caught his attention was a bloodied mark limping into the kitchen, not noticing the dull sun silently eating out his emotions
donghyuck coughed lightly causing mark to whip around
donghyuck gasped as he saw blood dripping out of marks nose and a harsh red mark on the side of his cheek
marks eyes widened at the sight of donghyuck "w-why are you still awake?" he stuttered as donghyuck walked towards him
"couldn't sleep" donghyuck murmured back as he gently touched marks face, drawing his hand back when mark hissed in pain from the stinging in his cheek
donghyuck seemed to regain his senses and rushed to the freezer
he came back with an icepack, handing it to mark as he wet a cloth. gently wiping away the blood ignoring marks burning stare
before mark could say thank you, the boy was once again gone, disappearing into the comfort of his room
mark stared at the half-eaten tub and sighed. taking donghyucks place he repeated his actions as he stared off into nothingness
donghyuck hadn't even questioned why mark had come in that state, he just wordlessly cleaned him up and left him clutching an icepack to his face
the sweetness of the sorbet made mark wrinkle his nose in disgust as he questioned how someone could eat something so overdone with sugar
the day's fatigue crashed over him like a wave and he slumped down, letting his head rest in his arms before sleep overcame him
...
for the next week, donghyuck continued to ignore mark, only speaking to him when it was necessary much to the concern of the other members who had grown fond of the cheerful boy
mark was grilled relentlessly and received all sorts of glares from norenmin
jeno was disappointed in his friend, urging him to fix things before it was too late but mark stubbornly refused
donghyuck avoided mark like the plague at school, always surrounded by his protective friends
he watched painfully as mark let mina climb all over him, seating herself on his lap during lunch and whispering into his ears too close for his liking
if mark wanted to be done then donghyuck was done
so he let mark do what he wanted, after all they were never really a 'thing' after all, and the older had made it clear where he stood
jaemin glared daggers at mark, whispering curses under his breath while renjun forced donghyuck to drink the jasmine tea he had made him
he said it would help calm his nerves and stress
yangyang and hendery came and sat down with trays of food they owed xiaojun for a lost bet and the boy clapped his hands in glee, letting their newfound friend chenle dig in while a very jealous jisung pouted angrily at the lack of attention chenle was paying towards him
donghyuck smiled at his suddenly populated friend group. it filled him with a sense of comfort knowing he had such a group of individuals to count on, but it also worried him
as if to support his point chenle suddenly choked on a handful fries and jisung frantically slapped the boys back
jeno sat with the boys but was still feeling quite torn, he completely disagreed with mark but he was like a brother for him and did feel guilty for not siding with him
he knew mark felt as if it was a betrayal to their brotherhood but he decided he would let donghyuck and mark sort it out themselves
